One party taking a two thirds majority at elections is unhealthy for a Constitutional democracy, DA leader Helen Zille said on Monday.
"That is absolutely wrong in a constitutional democracy because it gives a party the right to mess with the Constitution, and we think that is entirely unhealthy," Zille said in an interview broadcast on eNCA.
Only President Jacob Zuma was calling for the African National Congress to get a two thirds majority, she said.
On Sunday, Zuma told volunteers at the Gauteng ANC's launch of its Moses Kotane volunteer brigades for the 2014 national elections: "We don't want anything lower than two-thirds [majority]".
Zille said in a democracy, the two biggest parties should be "roughly evenly balanced" to keep the government on its toes, knowing it could be voted out of office.
The Democratic Alliance would like to "bring the ANC below 60 percent", which it considered healthier, she said.
