Hi all

I've been quoted ZAR2200 per tyre for a 225/65 17 Continental Crosscontact LX. Is this a fair price?

Thanks in advance!

It doesn't sound too bad, but could be a little on the pricey side. Have you gone for quotes at other shops?

My car has 205/55/16 and they set me back R1150 a tyre. I was quoted R2200 for 225/55/17 runflats and R3000 for 17" tyres for an Audi (given those tyre sizes are not very popular).

not a common size, lesser known brands we sell for about 1.3k (Kenda) Considering Conti's ****ty dealer pricing, that sounds about right

I was in the market for new tyres a few months back. I had Michelin 255/35/19 all round and was quoted R5,200 per tyre
I hunted around and found Toyo are a direct competitor to Michelin in Europe and found Mintys in SA sold these tyres. R2,200 each.

I race from time to time and found zero difference in performance between these and my Michelin tyres. Worth a look maybe?

Aside from basic manufacturing costs, a lot of the tyre price is in how common that size is. You may just be sitting with a slightly arb tyre size, which is why it is fairly pricey.

Unless it's a cheap Chinese brand, smaller than 16", or 50% off, then tyres are generally quite expensive - to ridiculous. My poor mother spent 16,5k on a set of pirelli pzero rosso 245/40/R19 for her benz cls the other day. A nice set of 225/45/R17 usually set me back 7,5k. 205/50/R17 set me back about 8,5k.

Those are big tyres, what car is it for?
Toyos are good, soft compound so not the best mileage.

You are correct. I prefer soft compound for the extra grip though.
I do about 500 kms a month only, so not too worried. Long periods between tyre changes.

These big @55 wheels are on a 2007 Audi A6 3.2 FSi Quattro. Quite a mouthful :p

What popular size would you recommend as a replacement?

225/45/17 conti's could be picked up for around R1500 each. Try Twt.

I paid R1850 for four new tires and alignment the other day. From Neptune Tires, which is a great little Dunlop branded place in a prime location here in PE. Benefits of having a small hatchback! I have a 2007 Daihatsu.

...

I always use Tyretraders to get an idea of what tyres will cost.

Decent for a quick indicator, as you say, but it's vital not to rely on any one outlet when it comes to tyres - phone around a bit. I'm not sure whether it was TyreTraders - it was one of these we-come-to-you-so-we're-cheaper outfits - but they were about 30% off base on the same tyre when I had to replace 4 recently.
