Howdy there mates,

Just a quick question for y'all.

So on my car manufacturer doccie (VW Scirocco 2.0 TSI DSG) it says that the recommended profile for my car is 235/40R/18, however, when I got the car all the tyres had this profile 225/40R/18, I've also seen this on a few of my mates Golf 7 GTIs too.

Doing a bit of reading and I see the profile that VW recommends for my car is actually used by ultra high performance cars e.g. Porche.

Now my question is, what are the disadvantages or advantages of sticking to the 225/40R/18 as opposed to actually using the recommended profile?

The 225s will be cheaper, for a start.
Don't mix and match sizes. That aside the only impact will be on speedo accuracy.

I don't think the width of the tyre is regarded as the "profile" , only the sidewall.

I personally prefer narrow tyres because it allows the wheel to stretch hence allowing the wheel to "show" a little more, if that makes sense. You'll barely feel any negatives from using a narrower tyre.

Profile is 40% of the width, so I'm not even sure it will be noticeable on the speedo with so little difference.

As for the width a whopping 1cm isn't going to make a major difference on traction or rolling resistance either way I reckon so I agree stick to what's cheapest and don't mix and match.

OP the Scirocco is based on the Golf 5 isn't it? If so does it have the same independent rear suspension?

If it doesn't make sure you rotate REGULARLY (as in 10,000km or preferably less) and make sure they rotate the rears left to right when they take them forward otherwise you will eat the inside of the tyre very quickly.

On my Chrysler if found no difference except price and availability when I replaced the extremely hard to find 225/60/18 with 235/50/18.
