Hi all

So its time to get tires again. To date i had Michelin PS3s, then i had PS4, then PS4 again. now im obviously looking at PS5 (Michelin Pilot Sport 5).
Tire size is 225 40 R18. Thing is, it used to be about 11k all in. but now its over 16k a set. Im struggling to justify the price. I also saw on tirereviews that the Goodyear F1 Assymetrical 6 is in some cases even better. at R5k less.

Any thoughts? experiences? I know that the GTI comes with F1's... so maybe a few owners here can share experiences

I do spirited driving with maybe one trackday a year, otherwise its mostly a daily that needs to perform well.

Im also open to alternatives.

Dankie!

Both excellent tyres. When I opened this thread I expected a lot more Chinese tyres to be mentioned.

Continental SportContact in that specific profile provides a much softer ride than the Michelin PS tyres.
i got the contisport on tiguan. though that is the SUV version, its very comfortable and definately lasts longer. Would be an option for sure, does depend how enthusiastically i want to drive over the next 2 years. will check it out

Why the need to get the Michelin PS5s, when the 4s did you well? If the price difference is that much, maybe try them again?

The Goodyears are Good and do a job. Would recommend as a daily, but in my view they are a level below the Michelins especially if you’re gonna do track days like you do.

As a side note, Maybe it’s just my experience, but Continentals wear pretty quickly. As a result I’ve stayed far away from them.

General Tyre is part of Continental (sub-brand), after I had a thorough discussion with a Conti Tyre franchise owner, he recommended it as he use it on all his vehicles and for his kids, so if you're looking for good cheaper alternative..

I moved from Toyo to Michelin to Continentals.

For the last few months I have been on Nexen N'Fera SU1's. Handling and tire noise are on par with the big name brands and if it is good enough for Porsche it is good enough for my lowely A7.

A higher traction rating (AA vs A) will, of course, correlate with higher tread wear.

But remember, @nazmo likes to live life to the fullest!

I do spirited driving

I went from PS4 to Asymmetric 6 and would recommend it 10/10. Performs about the same and I find them a lot more comfortable over bumps. This is on 225/45/R17.

The price on Michelins now is crazy compared to a few years ago.

Traction is actually a good point. Currently with my power output im not really struggling with traction. If i go with a lesser tire i will definately be worse off. im not too concerned with lifespan (or noise) to be honest. i work from home so an appropriate tire is more important than one with high miles

thanks and noted! yes i cant justify R5k bump for a difference i might not feel. i heard the Asymmetric 6 isnt as good in the wet, but i never push in the wet, not worth the risk.

thanks for the input. i dont necessarily want to go cheap, I just dont see the value in michelins anymore. The other factor is yes, i do one trackday a year. maybe more. and michelins dont shred or damage. So whatever tire i take must be proven on track, what i dont want is to have damaged tires after a session

Also ordered these so its a pricey month. cant complan, back disks lasted 7 yrs and 82 000kms, they just have hubs so they pricey. at OEM prices i rather went for this all round.

What car is it?
On a whatsapp group guys were complaining about GY and sidewall bubbles...
Also happy with nexen su4 for the price in that size, although I did hit a pot hole 2 weeks ago and both tyres and rims need to be sorted now

Had to same predicament early this year. Had PS4 that was about R1,8k per tyre now PS5 R2,8K per tyre.

Couldn't justify the price as well and with potholes and bad roads. One might have to replace a tyre due to this.

Ended up going with the Nexen SU4 at about R1k per tyre
