I need to change my tyres but the Goodyear Assurance 196/55R16 81H are a bit expensive and hard to find what best alternative do I have?

Would upsizing be a good idea to 205/55/R16 same brand? I have been quoted and I have been recommended this buy a certain tyre company.

Seems like a decent alternative.

You're speed will be out by about 5% plus you need to make sure the wheel arch can fit it

Probably not the true reason, but I have been told that a vehicle's speedometer always is out, giving a slower than actual reading to compensate for the tyre's thread wearing out through normal use. As the thread gets less, the vehicles indicated speed will become more, and by having it indicating less, ensures that your car's speed indication never lets you think you are still under the speed limit, while you actually may be over.

It can't be that. As tread decreases the circumference gets smaller, which means less distance per revolution and hence slower than indicated speed.

Now that I actually think about that, it's true. I have always just taken that at face value and never given it a thought. My bad.

I'm also running 195/55/R16. I have Conti EcoContact and they're pretty good so far. Weren't too expensive either when I got them.

My understanding of the reasoning for the speedo overreading is so that the consumer does not get hit with fines for speeding when they're driving according to the speedo - would open manufacturers up to liability claims.

I still have 2 of those on my car were pretty good, but yeah tyre popped about 2 Sundays ago so had to replace the tyre. Was happy with them, pricing wasn't bad 5 years ago :-).

That seems a bit far fetched for a speedometer to be out by 10% when 100% tyre wear would affect true speed reading by about 1%.
What year model is your vw bug?
Next time you drive on the freeway open up the speedometer on Google maps/Waze and compare that to your cars speed reading. I'm pretty sure you'll be surprised at the results.

I also have it this way, although I can't substantiate this with any actual facts.

Also searching for the same size, But decent brands are starting at R2400 per tyre, jeepers I cant fathom paying R10 000 on a set of tyres for a mere hatchback.

Isnt it is motoring regulation or something like that, I cant remember but I read an article and it said something about it.
