Ubiquiti Unifi Mesh

Hi,

Ive been asked to re-do an existing mesh in a fairly large house. Im thinking of buying 3 of these. Money/Cost is not an issue.

My question is how does one build a mesh when the setup is done as follows. Lets call the AP's: A B and C.

AP A is connect to the router and will be programmed by the controller. AP's B and C are in the house and powered by their own PoE. There is no network cable coming back to the switch for them. Will the AP's still detect each other and build a mesh using a single SSID ? The little Tenda AP's which are currently installed do this yet appear to be unreliable with Apple products for some unknown reason.

Any assistance or advice regarding these devices will be appreciated.

I've only used the outdoor units. Just set them up all 3 as wired units, and then move them to where you will use them.

If AP1 is wired, then you can set AP2 and AP3 to use a wifi uplink from AP1. IE they both connect to AP1. But AP2 can not provide an uplink to AP3 if it is provisioned with uplink from AP1.

Steps to setup like this:

1. setup (adopt) ap1 (all setup is in unifi software)
2. plug in ap2 and ap3 into the same network and "adopt" them
3. Move ap2 and ap3 to where it will be used after they are adopted.
3. ap2 and ap3 will go into "isolated" mode.
4. Set ap2 and ap3 to use wifi uplink from ap1.

in between each step you wait about 2 minutes for the correct mode to show for each device.

Note if you change the ip address range after setup you have to set up from scratch. So make sure to connect them to the network before adopting so they know the ip range they are set up for. The unify software can help to detect if there is a problem with the uplinks. You can monitor throughput on the aps and see each clients signal strength etc.
