Hi,
I am looking at dumping my tp-link touch p5 router and airties mesh . Looking at replacing It with ubiquiti.

Looking at using the ubiquiti usg feeding to a poe switch which will give power to a poe switch in the ceiling and feed my ap points from there,
Will this work?
Do I use the ubiquiti usg? Or the unifi dreamrouter wifi6. Looking at something simple and efficient.

Don't buy a USG, it's old and underpowered.

Get the Dream Router if you want to go the Unifi route.

Not easier to get a router to handle the WAN/internet connection and then just get a PoE switch to power the Unifi's?

Then use the unifi controller software on a PC to do the initial setup?

I have pretty much the exact configuration you describe. Has worked flawlessly for about 4 years now. Of course, that was purchased well before Dream Routers were available. The limit of a USG is considered to be about 100Mb/s, depending on whether you're using load sharing, packet inspection, etc. But that's fine for me.

Definitely go UDM.. it integrates the cloud key, so you have the unifi controller hosted already..

I have the usg and it's fine for my needs, but I had to buy a cloud key separately to host the unifi controller (I didn't want to host a software instance on my PC etc)..

USG hasnt been made for a few years and think somebody at Ubiquiti forgot to delete it from the web site.

Why would you have a switch in the roof, are your cable runs that long? Would you power the switch in the roof from mains or would it get power from the PoE switch down below? If from below how many AP's?

Can only get one cable run into the roof ,that will power the switch in the roof.existing cable from the roof will run from poe switch in roof to a powered from mains switch in the study. Poe switch in roof will also power 4 ceiling mount ap's

What does your system consist of?, how have you set it up?

Sounds like you want UTP in to the roof to power 4 AP's and that wont work from a UDR. It has af out so limited output to this https://scoop.co.za/ubiquiti-5-port-gigabit-1poe-in-4poe-out-unifi-flex-switch-usw-flex.html

If you can get mains power in the roof to the one UTP thats different. Not sure I am following the plan here

USG, Dual Band AC Lite AP, 8 Port Gigabit 4x802.3af PoE 60W Switch. The Ubiquiti software runs on a Windows PC, but I don't have the software running all the time. The USG, Switch and AP can operate just fine on their own. You just need the Ubiquiti software for setup and updates

You running one ac lite ap?

Yes, just one up in the roof (well above the ceiling, on a rafter). I thought I'd need two, but as it happens one gave me all the coverage I need

There's alot of UBNT talk here, Let me be the first one to try to sway you away. Reyee, I've installed a good portion of them, Works like a charm, is free cloud management software, is plug & play, is super powerful, and is cost-effective.
Ubuntu is expensive and it looks pretty fast forward a few years then chuck the management software out and you're left with a bunch of open-access AP's. Some of Ubnt is cool, but eish tis expensive for something that really isn't all that expensive if you know what the heck you want.

OK, so the question now is how big an area is that ap covering? N
How many rooms are you getting wifi from it?

So what would you recommend for my application then?

Agreed that the USG is old, however I have been using mine for 4 years without issue and has handled my 100/100 fibre connection with 2 Netflix streams without a hickup.
It just works.
Yep, if it's working well then no need to get rid of it, I just wouldn't buy one new at this point in time.
