Ubisoft wants valve to remove player count tracking

Hansen. He behaved like a 5 year old. Two days ago nobody knew his name and today he is in the news for the all the wrong reasons.

I won't disagree. He did act like a child; however, he didn't run. He has been on Bluesky since, whenever, now. The posts that is being dug up are older than two days. I mean, the one shared by Grummz clearly shows it to be "Retweeted", and others are BlueSky screengrabs, some dating back to March. No, it isn't two days, it is months to years.

He could have said they cater to a broad audience and things would have ended there but no this brainless idiot had to insult Elon Musk who has 200m followers seeing his every tweet.

Baldur's Gate III also catered to a broad audience.

I’m currently binging on Baldur’s Gate 3. Easily the best RPG since the Witcher 3. What are you playing right now?

Are people attacking the game or are they attacking the man? From how it looks now, Obsidian is being attacked, people are digging into PoE. It is the Eora world, and Avowed is also based in Eora.

And if that wasn't bad enough already he openly admitted to agendas and illegal hiring practices in his follow-up insults which brought not only the product shipping in 3 months but also his employer under scrutiny.

Now that is your own reasoning. I doubt you had a sit in on the details. Even the public playtesting only recently took place.

This gullible man-child caused quite a shitstorm. He is a clown and should be fired with immediate effect.

Elon Musk tagging Satya Nadella is all show. What is it that he wants to achieve?

Not Musk, not Grummz, neither Cheong have played Avowed. It is hard to determine the game's wokeness meter by only looking at pronouns. Now the character creator is being attacked, and there is no merit to it. For now, it looks more like they are attempting to derail the game prior to launch.

The employment practices, well, that is up to the executives to handle. It is not Obsidian, it is who owns them. Is Hansen involved in organising interviews, sure, but he does not write the policies nor HR.

This discourse is intentionally happening. Some raw X monetisation bait.

@Fulcrum29 seems me and you are completely going over each other's heads here. You are literally quoting what I wrote but then go off addressing something else entirely.

Just to be clear here so you don't confuse my intensions further - Matt Hansen is the reason this game is now under microscope, not Elon Musk.

In most games it's optional, but people scream 'woke! woke!' at the tyniest of crap

The only actually woke game I've ever played is Veilguard
Veilguard is only woke because of non-binary lecturing chats that lasts maybe 4 minutes max. 4 minutes in a 90+ hour game and that's what drama queens whine about.

Nah, bro

It's the only game I have ever seen that lectures you for misgendering
Don't get more woke than that

Imagine if that was not in the game. Would it have changed the story?
No

It's put in there, because they have an agenda. There is no other reason

Again, chats lasting 4mins max overall, in a 90+ hour game.

It's not as if they talk about pronouns for 90 hours. I 100% agree that crap does not belong in a game, but it's not that bad. I'm not gonna let 4 minutes of lecturing ruin an otherwise excellent game for me. I roll my eyes for a couple of seconds and move on.

Not talking about the quality of the game

Just stating that it is the only actual woke game I've played

According to Endymion. Musk should buy Bioware...

He added that Awoved is destined to fail, but that it will be saved by Call of Duty because people subscribe to Game Pass because of Call of Duty. Essentially he is making Game Pass the problem, that Game Pass is a breeding ground for these ideologies.

Further he said that the previews of Avowed won't tell you woke the game is because Obsidian's plan is to have people download it and play so that the studio can use those metrics for promoting the success of their agenda.

The pronouns is definitely not enough for them for final judgement.

I am not on the woke train, and I also want current sociopolitics to be an pillar of a game. This, however, is bizarre, just an odd cancel culture. Throwing schit and hopes that it sticks. They are bargaining on speculative opinion to be true. It is bad information.

Just like they said that Call of Duty will save the game, if there are few incidents of "wokeness" to be found in the final product I won't be surprised that they will call it a victory as a result of their anti-woke campaigning.

People wanted the pendulum to swing, but now it is swinging into an area of absurdity.

I just can't wait for both sects of the left and right for attacking Steam, it has been long in the making, regulatory pushes have been made in the past. People may be in the view that the woke is killing video games, but it will be the elite, those who influence decisions on all levels of play. Those who will be taking away the licences you bought to access an game, it is not the woke. Gamers are going to be confused.

I wouldn't say Veilguard is woke at all because the woke elements are way too few and far between. Social media made it sound way worse than it actually is as usual.

Same thing happened with BG3 and is currently happening with Avowed simply because someone saw a screenshot of he/him.

Oh, sorry, was the article about private data? I thought it was about player counts. Bloody click bait titles

I am going to give this some context. Any user on Steam that have their account set to private can't be tracked, any user that has their game details set to private can't be tracked. Any user that only enable the checkbox that keeps their total playtime private can't have their time tracked. This is important.

The Steam API can track concurrent online users, but it only monitors the users at a given time in a game who are currently online, and the data is cached. It isn't real-time. Some trackers have their own algorithms to plug the gap in-between the cached intervals. This is the data you see in the Steamdb charts.

The data that you can't see is whether that user in the data is playing the game. Now, you do have trackers that track user accounts by crawling the pages, but this is resource intensive. Typically, tracking is done on a per-user basis, primarily relying on users to submit their or others data to be analysed. Steam once allowed this through their API without scraping.

What you have with Steamdb is a single data point. You can't see the total progression in any game. You have no idea whether the user is in-game, or not in-game. You don't know who is a bot or a user (though technically all bots are users). At best, you can do comparisons through monitoring achievement unlocks to get an impression, but it isn't reliable. This data was also once available.

I guess it depends on what results you want. For some, the concurrent users metric will be enough to drive their argument. What I said is, Steam limited what is exposed to the public. Steam can also only track a user that is online. Any application that is not launched online, not being connected to the Steam Network, is not captured.

Neither does Steam 'discriminate' against users that use tools like Archi. They, their bot(s), are also tracked. Archi has more than 4 million users. They can mess around. I doubt that this is an issue, they are well-behaved. CS bots are destructive.

Steam is already implementing additional restrictions like enabling private branches. Now some dev branches can't be tracked any more. Essentially, outsiders can't speculate what is up with a game. Steam also has their own web analytics, and stopped using Google some time ago. Publishers/developers can request access to this data.

All this said. I doubt that the insider is real in any case. "Insider" have become the most abused tool in reporting. Drama, it is all it is.

You can be a chick with a dick
Any other game it would be called 'woke'

You have the option to use they/them pronouns

You can make a character with Vitiligo
Veilguard was torn to shreds for having that option, but this is BG 3 so magically nobody cares
If that stuff is limited to character creation and romance options then it's fine. When is baked into the story like Veilguard, that's an issue...

This has been discussed before but it's not really limited to character creation either, the entire Act 2 of BG3 is about a lesbian couple, you can chose do it it your own way, but the NPCs are written as such, unless someone can correct me.

People love to give BG3 a pass, "same but different" vibes

Gay and lesbian has been a thing forever. It's not an issue. CP2077 also swings that way with Judy's story. It's not about giving BG3 a free pass.

Nobody has an issue anymore with the way you're born and which sex you're attracted to. They have an issue with made-up conditions about identity that don't exist in nature, which they're trying to legitimise and make it seem like it's normal. It's the TQI++ attaching to the LGB to give themselves legitimacy that's the problem...

huh, I actually just found this out now:

1732805490768.png

Voiced by a trans person. Did people have an issue with this early on? I honestly don't know, don't think I've even seen that character in my play through xD

I mean, you can think this way but just look at Fulcrums post above, literally the same people having a meltdown about pronoun selection in Avowed didn't give two shites about it in BG3
Probably because BG3 has substance to it.

While it has some of the usual stuff trying to appeal to "moden audiences" it also had solid storytelling, appealing gameplay, decent characters and voice acting, backed up with some clear love for what came before it.

They did. BG3'S gameplay was too strong for it to have real influence or impact. If the gameplay is strong enough these cultural war issues just become mist in the wind. If gameplay isn't strong enough it becomes the cherry on top to compound issues the game faces.

Yea but that’s the funny part isn’t it? How quickly they abandon their morals just because the gameplay was good.

I mean Avowed isn’t even out yet, a bit early to know if it has substance or not.

Well, most folks pushing back against this nonsense do not do so because its not a question of morals, but rather of the activism getting in the way of the game.

I personally don't give 2 shits about a person's sexuality, race, gender (or any other arbitrary characteristics) in the context of game development/game play, BUT when you are employing sub-par people on the basis of these characteristics and your game suffers as result of this skills gap and pandering to certain ideologies then I'll be the first one to dance on the grave of said game.
