Ubuntu 12.04.1 Released

I'm just guessing, but this might be precisely why it was marked invalid; to stop people who didn't use update-manager or do-release-upgrade from finding it in the default searches.

If you look in the bug now, you'll see the person who marked the bug invalid is still offering suggestions on how to fix your installation and how to send the informattion they are requesting.
What the invalid has done is also stop email notification - means I don't have up to date info.

The suggestion was apt-get -f install, which was the very first thing I tried after I got the your system is broken message. As I said, apt is broken, so I can't install anything. I'm sure even if I try to install by hand, I'm going to be blocked by apt

Just an idea but how about updating apt manually by running the latest deb or installing it from source?

I don't think apt (the program) is broken, it's the database that has the broken dependencies in it, so it doesn't matter what I do, it keeps giving errors. dpkg also uses the database :(

I am going to do a clean install which should fix that problem :D

Thanks to you and ginggs for your interest.

I once recovered from a dependency issue in debian after using apt pinning to mix repos. I eventually got it working after removing about a third of the packages/apps one at time and checking which is the next one to complain.

Unfortunately that's probably what everyone else did, that's why the bug has not been resolved. :(
I'm going to try and get as much info for Stefano as I can, before I format. I just need to go through the logs, and also see if I can get apport working.

You definitely have more patience than me :)
