Ubuntu 26.04

Gnome 50 considered a major change so some are recommending backups if forcing the upgrade early. More easily available public release of this LTS only expected from August.

Upgraded laptop from 24.04 to 26.04 with no issues.
Noticeable battery life and performance increase. (T14 gen6 Lenovo)

Also running new VM under Proxmox for testing and seeing some performance increase also compared to 24.04

Will wait with updating prod workstation until 26.04.1

I went with forcing the developer release when upgrading. smooth sailing so far 🤷‍♂️

Likewise, public reports to date were that it's largely stable, and faster. Power users will know how to be more cautious

Impressed with what I've seen, just some extra nanny efforts and a few old default choices needed redoing.

Not sure if this is woke or necessary ;)

A few small bugs noticed;
Accessibility menu icon stays on even if set to off, if any of its settings are altered (and that was used 'cos the default for keyboard repeat keys ("bounce keys") still needs serious adjustment).
Their original default Screenshot app can't take selection-type screendumps. (The other default "print screen" version works fine.)
Their default "Videos" video player grabs and lists every video on your system during the setup. (Removing any will dump those videos in the trash.)
Multiple-screens mode is on by default.
Opening apps always places them in the screen centre now instead.
Old bypass-login setting was ignored.
Old custom shortcut keys discarded.

Also went with the forced upgrade after release. This was with both the Gnome and KDE desktops to try out the new versions. No serious issues yet and a welcome bit of a performance bump. The laptop is next.

Reinstalling the Software & Updates Tool (for tweaking how updates etc. work) is easy enough.

Code:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install software-properties-gtk

(This process will mention that some older files could be removed - not really necessary at this early stage)

If anyone needs help with this just tag me.

I would advise against upgrading at this time, not because, but because Canonical is under attack. Their beloved Snap is also, currently, most unaccessible. I would wait until there is peace in their sphere.

Many such attacks are happening at the moment. Wherever there is a DDoS at this scale, the threat actors are probing.

Did see delays with the local Rain mirror on Thursday when I upgraded.

Progress re the attack can be monitored here;

Apparently some group in (or protesting about) Iran are claiming responsibility :-/

It is better now, and more relevant to new installs. You don't need Snap to upgrade. I don't like Snap, so there is that. For people who want a standard desktop experience, Snap is recommended with Ubuntu.

Sad to see them attacked like this nonetheless. It isn't only canonical being targeted. I have SaaS services that have been wonky all week, and when there is an on-going DDoS I attempt to make my services as inaccessible as possible. You never know what the angle, or true attack vector, is with an DDoS.

I don't mind Snap, has improved. Long gone are my days of largely living in a Shell / Terminal, just happy enough to have given Windows the boot years ago :cool:

You have now extended the term "woke" to mean just about anything you dont approve of. I would love you to define "woke". Though wrong thread for this discussion.

And you have now confirmed, again, you like many a woke effort. 🤷‍♂️

Also, you seem to like looking for shyte

"Woke culture" is a movement focused on identifying systemic social injustices, though it is frequently criticized for embracing exaggerated sensitivities through "cancel culture" and performative activism. While supporters view it as essential for social progress, opponents argue its focus on identity politics promotes a climate of excessive political correctness that stifles open discourse.

You forgot to bold the rest of the sentence, it has context.

This is a forum, we have opinions, theyre not all yours. Just calling out over politicization of an ergo feature.

Going to go ahead with upgrading my other PC now. I presume any interruption to the downloading would auto recover, or with a reboot so just need to then be patient - these guys don't play with safety design.
