Ok so here's the screenshot of when I startup and sort the processes according to usage:

That's quite hectic. My processes use between 2 and 4 times less... I honestly can't udnerstand why though. I do know that compiz for instance under KDE uses about 50MB more RAM than with Gnome.

Could you try installing the Ubuntu desktop (sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop) and letting us know then? This is one reason why I moved to Gnome from KDE- with KDe my average RAM usage was around 800-1000 but has gone down to under 400 with Gnome.

Not the KDE menu. KDE 3 is clever. The others are stupid ;)

Ooh. Quadcore.... yummy. They should bring those into laptops sometime.
Yeah it does look a lot better. Don't worry about your swap usage there. Mine does that too. No idea why, because I have another 1700MB's RAM available...

I was reading the other day some articles that were basically saying that KDE allows programs to keep a bigger footprint in memory when it is not needed. And as when memory is needed apps lose some of the allocated memory depending on whether they are in use or not. I may have badly butchered the articles but it seemed to me that was the gist of it.

I've heard that too. Not sure if it supposed to improve performance or what, but I personally find (I actually liked KDE a lot more than Gnome) Gnome to run a lot faster than KDE. Desktop manager specific applications don't put me off because "XXXX-kde" and "xxxx-gnome" works in either manager.
