froot - see post #16. Maybe swift-wp should upload a snapshot of ksysguard cause if it is anything like mine the actual apps are using less than 512MB although all of the RAM is being utilised.

Sorry, didn't see it. I have realised that my Ubuntu caches a little RAM now and again, but this has never showed as "used RAM".

When I looked at Ksysguard yesterday on my debian there were 3 categories - application RAM, buffered RAM and cache RAM. The sum of the 3 totalled the 1GB my system has (or just under to be correct). The application RAM was around 448MB.

I use SystemMonitor for Ubuntu. Has other options but as default shows the application RAM. Of which mine is usually ~300-450.

You have to be doing something wrong. My installation rarely goes above ~500MB even with several applications open. Never used up even close to all my RAM in a very long time.

Go to processes in KSysguard and sort according to RAM usage. Then you can see what's using all the RAM.

Thanks. I'll try that today when I get home.

I'll take a few snaps today if I don't sort out the problem. I'll try and upload it ASAP.

Here's the screenshot of KSysGuard:

For some reason the RAM usage was below a GB. It's like it sensed I was going to take a screeney:eek:

It's still high. Some possible reasons:
1. You are using KDE. It uses a lot more RAM than Gnome, which is why I moved to Ubuntu from Kubuntu.
2. Apache, possibly other programs too. What non-standard applications are you running, ie apache, compiz, mysql, etc.

swift-wp: Can you provide a snapshot of the system load tab?

Yes I am using Kubuntu. KDE for life. Anyway. I'm running the whole LAMP setup, compiz-fusion, emerald, Nero, etc.

Sorry for the long delay in posting the screenie, but I never had the time. Will post it later after I write. The RAM usage went up to 1.9GB.

Do a system restart and don't open any programs. Then sort your programs according to RAM usage and post that picture. From there we should be able to help better.
