Ubuntu 7.04 on MS Virtual PC 2007

I'm running Win XP and MS Virtual PC 2007 and would like to know if Ubuntu can be installed in MS Virtual PC ?

I have tried, many times; but it always gets so far and no further. The Ubuntu Boot Menu comes up, I select install and then... The CD just spins for ages. Nothing appears on the virtual machine window - for a very long time.

I am not a complete noob to MS VPC, I have already successfully installed another instance of Windows; but that is about as much as I know how to do :o

Any help would be appreciated :)
 
I tried it on Virtual PC but it didn't work. The only thing that I could get that would let Ubuntu 7.04 work is VMware. Don't know if I did anything wrong on MS VPC
 
works fine in MS VPC2007 for me, except i dont have sound...

EDIT: getting the mouse to work was bit of a mission tho, some bug in the linux kernel apparently
 
Why would you want to install ubuntu on a windows machine? You're missing out on its biggest feature: not running windows :D

Same problem with me, I can run Ubuntu/kubuntu V6.06 on MS virtual PC but V7.04 won't install... :(
 
IIRC there was some issue with colour depth, VPC can only handle 16 and 32 bit, while Ubuntu's default is 24.

cant remember what i did to fix it, will have to check and get back to you guys...

The default install option doesnt usually work on MS VPC

There is another option, something like "install with safe vga" ...

Have tried that - no go. comes up with some weird error message that I can't remember - but gave up on it anyway - back to XP on the Desktop and my Macbook.
 
I tried the safe VGA mode and it did go further. It won't pickup the mouse or keyboard though, so dead end ! Oh well, not the end of the world ;)

Hi everyone

USB keyboards and mice work fine with ubuntu 7.04. When installing, press F6 (i think) and select a VGA mode that only uses 16bit colour.

enjoy, playing with Ubuntu before committing to it.
 
VMWare player will only play virtual machines that have been already created. You can't create a virtual machine from it.

Because workstation has lots of nice extra features:
- Dual Monitor Support
- Snapshots (although you can get something like this by copying a VM in Player) In VMWare, you can have something like this:

And then switch back and forth between the Snapshots. You can even make the VM always start at a certain point when the system starts.

- Virtual Networks - These enable you to setup a whole bunch of connected VM's in a private network
- Clones - This can include dependent clones. So you can have a VM with XP and a second VM with XP and Office which only contains the differences between the two. Makes groups of VM's much smaller.
- Differences in multi-processor and VM limitations (RAM size, disk size etc)
- Built in VNC
- Ability to control VM's through API
- Visual Studio Debug Support

I am sure there are lots of others. IMO, VMware is a must have for any developer and probably for most other people too.
