Ubuntu 9.10 - Newbie advice -

Thanks for all the tips folks. The last time I tried Ubuntu was 7.04 and it was a nightmare with all the terminal commands required. 9.10 us great. I haven't used the terminal once - which is great for a Windows user.

Windows is just a mindset, Ubuntu will help you break it
The terminal is really quite powerful, you will be using it sooner or later, do some reading up on it, there are some useful commands you can use to get you out of sticky situations. Linux empowers their users where windows imo does not.

You'll also find the community much friendlier, if you need help people are willing to share what they know quite readily, I'm sure we will all answer your questions here if we can, if not then there are always answers on the ubuntu forums.

P.S for bandwidth/nettraffic monitoring I suggest:

vnstat

I have'nt seen that one yet, I'll install it and check it out.

There is also a nice net traffic monitor widget available, you can find it under 'Screenlets'. It works just fine on ppp connections too, sits on compiz widget layer, handy

Afaik, you can get a nice fancy php gui frontend for it. But i prefer using the plain straight terminal version. Its more efficent and less hassle. It also has the added oonus of being hardcore.

I think I have followed all the steps in this info but I can't still get a cube on my screen! I can switch between 4 desktops in the panel but there is no cube.

EDIT:
Cube is now there although it's too big, I will keep playing with it.

Under the cube settings there is a 'zoom' option, just adjust the slider, the cube will zoom out more. Get some skydomes and cube caps while you're at it

I followed 3 articles yesterday explaining how to make a fixed terminal permanently part of your desktop background which I thought I noticed in that Ultimate Theme thing youtube video that I thought was pretty neat. 2 didn't work for me and 1 was a little too advanced to follow especially late at night. I ended up installing stuff I didn't need and playing with all sorts of settings that would be a mission to get back to the way they were before in compiz and what not.

Isn't there an easier way that anyone may know of? Aside from downloading a 2.4gig version of Linux which I assume has it all built in. Maybe a download of something already pre-set I haven't found?

The best result I got from those articles was to have a terminal at startup that was transparent but it was still a window and not fixed and could be closed and maximized and what not. But at least I got everything to look nice by installing the 60meg version of that Ultimate theme

It would just make it nice and convenient to have a terminal there and makes me look like I know what I'm doing

I have got the cube running. Now, can I make the cube to be displayed while I am not doing anything on any workspace or holding Ctrl&Alt and be able to choose any workspace I want from the cube in order to work?

For me it works if I press CTRL+ALT and hold down left mouse then move the mouse .... I think that is what you are asking.

I want to keep my cube displayed without me having to keep pressing CTRL+ALT or mouse. It would be cool to be able to click a mouse and hold to rotate and then perhaps double click to bring the workspace you want, wouldn't it? That is want I want to do.

I am trying to run the cube 2 sauerbraten game and get the following error:

~/sauerbraten$ ./sauerbraten_unix
./bin_unix/linux_client: error while loading shared libraries: libSDL_image-1.2.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Got the package to install.

sudo apt-get install libsdl-image1.2 libsdl-mixer1.2
