HI guys.

I'm a complete Linux newb here and have just installed Ubuntu on my new laptop. At the moment I'm surfing over a wired ethernet connection to my router but I'd like to set it up so that I can connect wirelessly. The only problem is that I am totally clueless about how to go about doing this.

I don't believe that my integrated wireless controller is being picked up by Ubuntu like the ethernet controller because it doesn't show up under network tools. The ethernet one shows up as eth0, an unknown device shows up as pan0 and something called a loopback inteface shows up as lo.

If you guys could direct me as to how to get myself up and running wirelessly that would be awesome. Many thanks.

Two things:
Give us the output of -
lspci

and, if you click on administration - hardware drivers, is anything listed there?

The wireless on my daughters PC also refused working on the fresh Karmic installation, but after a system update it was fixed. Try that also.

Nothing is listed under Admin -- HW Drivers.

I've been bumbling my way around a few online guides and I see that this is quite the sticky topic. I seem to be in over my head. :P

You can also just do this if it seems to daunting:

Code:
sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-karmic
I'm not sure if they already have it available, but that is what worked on Jaunty.

This post is my first wireless post from my new lappy. Thanks once again MyWorld!

Please help me...

I am using Telkom as my ISP and now have recently signed up with another ISP and they have given me a username and a password, but I don't know how to add them to my router, Billion 400G. I have Ubuntu 9.10 installed.

Hi Lostee
You can open your web browser and by the address bar you type 10.0.0.2 and it will ask you to type in the username and password. The username and password they are both (admin). When you in the billion page, you click on >advanced>quick start>manual>apply and then you can type in your ADSL username and password there! To safe your configurations you click on>apply and then safe config. After saving your ISP details the internet light on the router must be green,if its red then you can phone your service provider to verify that username and password that you are using.
