'Says missing operating systems' after the first boot of Ubuntu installation (after ejecting the Ubuntu installation disk). I forced the boot sequence on BIOS to the External USB drive i'm currently busy installing Linux to, but on first boot attempt, it gives this error. Could it be my system not managing to boot from USB, or the files didn't copy well?

did you install grub or another boot loader package on the usb drive?

Grub...

Whilst on this post.. Can one view linux partition on windows? I'm now XP & can't see the drive letter to the newly created partition. But when i go to disk management, its there with no drive (its name is 'healthy partition' though)

Secondly, i've used daemon tools to create a virtual drive & haven't mounted anything on it. I can't seem to remove it... It's taking up my drive letters (sitting on drive O)...

In the ubuntu installation you should have an option to setup a bootloader (i haven't done it for ages, so i don't remember the exact details). This locates the operating system on a drive and launches it, without it you go nowhere.

You could try boot from this very useful iso, and see if it locates your external drive:
http://linux.softpedia.com/get/System/Boot/Super-Grub-Disk-8071.shtml

if you right click on the daemon tools icon in your taskbar, you should be able to set devices to 0... again, i'm going off memory here

Did setup Grub boot loader after it said other OS were detected

Thanx, i actually removed this drive from disk management. If i set to 0 then my other virtual drive will be gone as well...

ok here is a link that works
http://download.forjamari.linex.org...ISH/0.9550/super_grub_disk_english_0.9550.iso

you can mount linux partitions using http://www.fs-driver.org/
that's only for ext2 though... do a google search for mounting ext3 in xp, should give you plenty of answers ;)

Something interesting here! your msg

doesn't show when viewing your response. Only shows when i hit reply (edit mode)... anyway, thanx

Tried Grub Boot Loader ISO. Does see the Ubuntu partition but when i select to boot it gives an error: 17 Cannot mount selected partition: File System Unknown...

hmm, my windows experience says format and reinstall to see if it happens again... one of the linux gurus might have a better solution?

Some1 said some linux OS don't support USB External HDD boot. And Ubuntu is one of them
