Hey guys,

So I'm running ubuntu on my other laptop (which I plan to use primarily). My firefox on there sometimes doesn't want to post on myBB, I also struggle (aka, can't at all) check my webmail online (smartermail)

I can surf the web fine, but things like forum posting and logging into websites seems impossible. I had v3.0.1 for Ubuntu so I found an installed v3.5. Still no joy.

I REALLY WANT THIS OS!!! But using my favorite browser seems impossible. And I don't browse for joy, I browse/login/do **** for work online.

I installed Virtual Box and WINE so I can run World Of Warcraft and still develop some applications for windows machines but ye... ****ing irratating.

PLEASE tell me there's something I can do to fix this

(posting from my windows machine because it actually works!)

How did you install firefox?

What I recommend is to save your bookmarks,
then use synaptic to uninstall all versions of firefox, delete the .mozilla folder in your home directory(enable hidden folders)

Then use synaptic to install Firefox 3.5, also search for flash and install flash using synaptic.

you can do this via terminal with commands but using synaptic is far easier IMO.

oh this is easy, Format and install Windows! :D

Firefox was installed by default with 9.04 of Ubuntu, when it acted up (I get a download request for newreply.php whenever I try to post a reply. It stalled and then gave me that, and won't even let me login to my webmail)

I wondered if 3.5 was released for Ubuntu, so I did a wget /untar thingy in Terminal which extracted it to "Firefox" folder in my Home folder.

I then just double click the firefox icon to run it.

I don't have any bookmarks or anything to worry about but I think it did work fine previously (installed it a couple of months ago and only now really started to play with it)

If the uninstall would really work then I'd be happy.

Guild Wars and WoW seems a bit too buggy to play though which saddens me, but I like being able to run VirtualBox and do my sheeeeet :)

OK, but firefox 3.5 is in the repo already so just use synaptic.

Use computer Janitor to do a cleanup, then update you repos using Synaptic package manager, then search for firefox 3.5(it's called shiretoko because it's a customized version specifically for ubuntu but still firefox.)

Oh I see. But why did Firefox 3.0.1 install AGAIN after I only marked firefox 3.5 for installation (this is a test post from 3.0.1)

wtf, and now its not working anymore.

WHO THE **** is secure-za.imr-somebody?!

and why do I need 3.0.1 installed to have shiretoko

you don't need 3.01, untick it in synaptic, you probably overlooked it.

but yeah this is strange, have no clue what's wrong because firefox works for me.. you can try opera though, it's much faster and you just download the .deb from Opera's site.

seems I get the same behavior with the smartermail in opera as well. I'm testing out mybb to see if it actually allows me to reply and send messages. Why am I getting "popup blocked" messages?!

*sigh*

very dissapointed. ol' windoze works fine. opera/firefox etc. *looks at the laptop yearning to just reinstall windows*

I *really* like ubuntu. But I can't afford to **** around on websites that just don't work

Do this:
rm -fr /home/[your username]/.mozilla/firefox

Now run firefox from a terminal:
firefox-bin

Do your normal browsing and when you encounter an error check the terminal to see if an error message gets displayed and post it here.

Firstly the problem with your browser trying to download the ".php" file will be with the web server and not your PC. Found this out in my early days of PHP development (last year).

As a rule of thumb with LINUX, stick to the default. Do not install bleeding edge for work - thats what VirtualBox is for. Wait a few weeks for the Ubuntu developers to be happy that the latest version is stable.

Since your new to the scence, use the GUIs to install your applications and avoid the command line (console) for now. Its much easier and you will break fewer things. Just remember that no matter what the OS is (Windows / OsX / Linux) its only as good as your experience.

Oh and I use Virtual Box to do Windows development (UNISA BSc) and its really great!!!

Then go ahead and install windows, enough of the threats already.

Thats just the thing, it's mybroadband.co.za's forum that's acting like this, but it appears only on Linux, not windows.

I think I'll try the console thing mentioned above just now before I go on. But yea, have the XP CD in hand... *cry*
