A visit to Launchpad.net, the Canonical initiative to centralise open source Linux collaboration projects, reveals a lot of information on what developers are currently grappling with.

Over its lifespan, Launchpad has logged information on nearly 500 000 bugs, many of which are at various stages of being addressed, or altogether fixed. There are currently 29 critical bugs being rooted out, but since being identified and logged, there is still no fix for bug #1.

So what is the critical bug that Ubuntu Linux developers still have to deal with on a daily basis? According to the Launchpad status report, “Microsoft has a majority market share in the new desktop PC marketplace. This is a bug, which Ubuntu is designed to fix.”

This bug reportedly holds back innovation in the IT industry, restricting access to IT in some parts of the world, and globally limits software developers from reaching full potential.

In order to replicate the bug and observe its effects, follow these steps:

1. Visit a local PC store.
2. Observe that a majority of PCs for sale have non-free software pre-installed.
3. Observe very few PCs with Ubuntu and free software pre-installed.

The Ubuntu Linux development community is working vigorously to address this problem, and they intend to see the following correct process implemented:

1. A majority of the PCs for sale should include only free software like Ubuntu.
2. Ubuntu should be marketed in a way such that its amazing features and benefits would be apparent and known by all.
3. The system shall become more and more user friendly as time passes.
