Hi guys.

I have a very strange problem regarding a new installation of Ubuntu 11.10. It seems to lose its internet connectivity (or part thereof) at random. One minute I would browse the web and the next, my web pages would stop displaying and the browser tells me to check the internet connection.

But the REALLY strange thing is, Update manager/Software Centre etc all seem to have their connectivity, yet the browsers seem to lose their connection every few minutes. It never works properly.

Any idea what's going on here or how to fix it? Ubuntu is fully updated.

I had Ubuntu installed.

On my modem, i use MAC address filtering (only allow devices that I add onto the list). On Windows my net works and on linux, it failed to connect.

How does one solve this?

There can be so many factors.

What type of connection are you using?
Only from one browser or does all (Chrome, Opera, etc.) do this?
Have you run the browser in question from terminal to see if there are any debug info?
Can you reproduce it consistently? If so, can you run a traceroute and paste the output here?
Is everything up to date on your installation?
etc.

Sounds like a dodgy router, modem or network card.

You using wi-fi, ADSL or HSDPA?

Firefox:
Double check in Preferences/Advanced/Network/Settings that "No proxy" is selected (or the correct settings specified).

It does this in both Chrome and Firefox. I'm using a Belkin broadband router and the pc is connected via ethernet cable. (iBurst).

Doubt it's my router as all the other PCs in my network have no problems whatsoever. I'm quite new to Linux and don't really know how to debug the apps, etc. Some advice there would be appreciated.

Thanks so much for the replies so far!

@MyWorld,

I'm assuming you want the output from the Terminal?

$ ls /var/log/

alternatives.log dmesg installer samba
apt dmesg.0 jockey.log speech-dispatcher
auth.log dmesg.1.gz kern.log syslog
boot dmesg.2.gz lastlog udev
boot.log dmesg.3.gz lightdm ufw.log
bootstrap.log dmesg.4.gz mail.err unattended-upgrades
btmp dpkg.log mail.log wtmp
ConsoleKit faillog news Xorg.0.log
cups fontconfig.log pm-powersave.log Xorg.0.log.old
dist-upgrade fsck pm-suspend.log

Hope that helps.

I'm assuming you're dual booting a PC - Windows/Ubuntu ?

If so are the IP addresses being handed out the same under both OSs (ipconfig/ifconfiig) ?

If not check if your router supports applying a fixed IP by mac no.

Now give me the output of the following:

Code:
cd ~
sudo cat /var/log/syslog > syslog
sudo cat /var/log/ufw.log > ufw

In your home directory, open those two files (syslog and ufw) with any text editor (like gedit), copy the contents and paste it here:
http://pastebin.com/

Post the links here.

It will work best if you do this immediately after you experience your troubles, then it will be easier to troubleshoot.

Thanks for all the replies.

It seems to have fixed itself while I was away for a while. :wtf: I'll keep this thread updated if trouble arises again.
