Ubuntu Maverick Sound not working

So I'm using Ubuntu Maverick or think it is called 10.0.4 I'll be switching over to the new one soon,but have a problem. My sound doesn't work will it be working on a clean install of the new Ubuntu?

I installed alsamixer gnome and used alsamixer in terminal to unmute all channels or what ever they are called. I've got a ATI Radeon 2600 Series running on Intel Dual Core 2.9GHZ. I Installed the drivers for my ATI HD sound and still not working after reboot. I also changed over to Intel sound settings in Sound--Preferences and on Alsamixer and also won't work. I usually plug in my sound in at the Blue port at the back can't remember what it is called ,when I plug it in the green output it just makes a huge noise. In alsa mixer it just shows the ouput for my HD sound settings but there is no louder or softer option only mute and unmute.

My sound worked fine on Ubuntu back at version 9 and also on Kubuntu...my sound also works on startup...so yeah what should I do...and Gentoo fans please dont tell me to switch to Gentoo...if I wanted a diffirent Linux Distro I'd rather compile my own Archlinux installation than Gentoo...but for now I'm sticking to Ubuntu.

Oh more details Im on a dual boot of Windows7 and Ubuntu...really want to get the sound working coz now I have to boot to WIndows to listen to music.
 
Before we get into details, may I ask if you have updated all your packages since you install 10.04?

With such a large piece of software, bugs are always found and fixed when the its released to the public.
 
Have you also installed Ubuntu Restricted? Should give you all the codecs for music/sound.
 
Ok really annoyed uprgraded to 10.10 will try Ubuntu restricted quick and then look at that link and give feedback.
 
I did everything they said I should do in that link except:"I cheated slightly here and disabled the integrated sound card on my motherboard. If ypu still have this enabled there maybe more listed from this command."<---DOnt really know what to do here. Feeling kinda noob right now.
 
Don't worry about that, he is just pointing out the fact that you maybe will see more cards listed on that command.

So can you paste here what the command aplay -l gave you?

Then we can move to next step.
