Ubuntu newbie installation help

Cant make head or tails of this OS's partition selection.

Got 3 partitions (SATA drive) created in Xp.
First part 20 gig ( where I want Ubuntu to load)
Selected to format again, NTFS, click next then it comes up with SCSI Partition 5.

How do I go about this, my first attempt at anything Linux:mad:
 
ghalied, on the SATA drive partitioned & formatted by Windoze heXPee, is there are data that you intend to keep? - if not, let Ubuntu erase the partitions and do its default partitioning for you.

Also, are you wanting to dual boot with heXPee installed on another drive?

Not that it is currently relevant, but which version of Ubuntu are you trying to install, 6.10 is the most recently released version.

Yes I want to dual boot, actually no and yes, Ubuntu on 1st partition, Xp on 2nd, Vista on the 3rd.
80 gig Sata

I deleted the 1st partition ad chose option 3, allowing Ubuntu to load and the partition with the most available free space which was partition, I have all my data on a file server so I'm just giving Ubuntu a run as I have never used another OS beside those from Uncle Bill$.

WOW, it's a thing of beauty I must say, everthing installed ok, network up ad running, VNC'ing to the comp works as well, nice, didn't have to install it either, impressed I must say.

Trying to get the latest drivers for my Intel Pro 100/S network card and nvidia graphics card.

the version I downloaded as "ubuntu-6.10-desktop-i386.iso"
 
Ok, some dual-boot advice: make sure that Windoze is on its own hard drive, or if you must have Windoze on the same HDD with Linux, then you're going to have to allow Windoze to use the very first [active primary] partition that bootloaders use.

The Linux GRUB bootloader is much more flexible than the Windoze bootloader, and GRUB allows you to fool Windoze into thinking that Windoze is all that you use, I have the following in my /boot/grub/grub.conf file:

map (hd1) (hd0)

chainloader +1
where hd0 actually has Linux written all over it, and hd1 has W2KP written all over it.

I've just installed ubuntu 6.06 on its own hdd.
I've got win2k on the other.

I would like my PC to boot into 2k each time. But obviously i would like the option of booting into ubuntu as well. This is one thing i havent worked out what to do.

As it stands now when the PC boots up it goes into the linux bootup menu, which is fine, but i would like it to always boot into windows. How do i do this?

Your setup is optimal, with Ubuntu on your first [IDE?] HDD, and Windoze on another HDD, this is IMO how it should be - always use the Linux Grub bootloader from your Ubuntu installation, and never boot into Linux or Windoze without first going through Grub :).

Have a look at [but don't edit], /boot/grub/menu.lst, you somehow need to add a section similar to what I posted from my Gentoo Linux's /boot/grub/grub.conf dual-boot setup [which my other Ubuntu 6.10 PC doesn't have], so I assume there is a Grub config tool that you need to use and that you shouldn't edit the files manually...
 
Ok, thanks IC. I've got lots to learn and lots to do.

I've just worked out how to view windows from ubuntu & ubuntu from windows.... Done!

Next 2 sort out is mp3 playing, dvd decoder, as well as boot up i still need to sort out.....
 
Well i've just spent the last 4 hours trying to get sort out a few things with linux. What i did achieved is very high blood pressure, and nothing else.

Looks like i'll need to spend the next few weeks here.....

Boodles returns for awhile to take a breather. It wont belong before i smash my keyboard followed by breaking my ubuntu cd.

I know the feeling very well - there is a very steep learning curve associated with Linux - especially if you're mostly used to Windoze like I was, but it is worth it in the end - especially if I look at how much of my ISP accounts caps was wasted on Windoze updates, and how much less gets wasted on Ubuntu, plus there is a local za.archive.ubuntu.com updates mirror [most not all on there] and if you're using an ISDSL local-only ISP account, then you score - and it's hosted with IS according to an IP whois lookup...:)
 
I achieved something on ubuntu. lol

I managed to get my printer up and running. Man i was happy. lol Then i printed a test page (x3 times ).... and it came out blank. lol
