I've just installeb ubuntu 7.10 but it doesn't detect my usb mouse. This obviously makes navigating a mystery since I'm used to MS keys.

Does anybody know how I can fix this problem, and also give me a quick rundown of the major control keys, especially the Start Menu equivalent?

MS compact optical mouse model 1016? Please don't tell me MS is the problem?

Well the USB->PS2 adaptor did the trick. The fact that the USB wasn't picked up (mouse didn't even light up) is a bit of a concern for me. Also when using lsusb, it only reported 3 USB devices.

Any guidance on how I can fix it now that I'm at least able to navigate through ubuntu?

when you reboot, at what point does it stop lighting when you move it about?

After I successfully used it with the ps2 adaptor, it even lighted up straight on the usb port. It never worked from usb but at least the light came on.

However, I think it is now official, my pc was definitely struck by lightning (about 4 weeks ago) since it behaves extremely erratically. Sometimes it won't switch on, then it will switches on but doesn't make it past the first beep, or won't go past the IDE detection screen, or boot into ubuntu and for no reason just hang with a blank screen and not being able to be turned off.

There are other symptoms as well, but I think you get the idea, and obviously the mouse is part of the same problem.

Thanks for the help
