Subject: Ubuntu One file services

Hi,

We are writing to you to notify you that we will be shutting down the
Ubuntu One file services, effective 1 June 2014. This email gives
information about the closure and what you should expect during the
shutdown process.

As of today, it will no longer be possible to purchase storage or music
from the Ubuntu One store. The Ubuntu One file services apps in the Ubuntu,
Google, and Apple stores will be updated appropriately.

As always, your content belongs to you. You can simply download your files
onto your PC or an external hard drive. While the service will stop as of
1 June, you will have an additional two months (until 31 July 2014) to
collect all of your content. After that date, all remaining content will
be deleted.

If you have an active annual subscription, the unused portion of your fees
will be refunded. The refund amount will be calculated from today's
announcement.

We know you have come to rely on Ubuntu One, and we apologise for the
inconvenience this closure may cause. We've always been inspired by the
support, feedback and enthusiasm of our users and want to thank you for
the support you've shown for Ubuntu One. We hope that you'll continue to
support us as together we bring a revolutionary experience to new devices.

The Ubuntu One team

I have not found an announcement like this on https://one.ubuntu.com/ and am a bit sceptical that Canonical would suddenly cancel Ubuntu One.

Maybe they'll strike a deal with Dropbox and bundle it with Ubuntu OS. Can also get a kickback from that.

So, as of April 2, 2014, "It will no longer be possible to purchase storage or music from the Ubuntu One store. The Ubuntu One file services will not be included in the upcoming Ubuntu 14.04 LTS release, and the Ubuntu One apps in older versions of Ubuntu (and in the Ubuntu, Google, and Apple stores) will be updated appropriately.

Seems like a non issue to me. Many alternatives exist. It's not like Ubuntu is shutting down. ;)

Actually not surprising. Data centers cost a lot of money to maintain and to keep up with technology. And for a non-profit organization it doesn't seem viable to pursue something that's just a huge expense.

Uhm, since when is Canonical Ltd. a non-profit organization and you do know who their cloud-enabled partners are?

I agree that it's not a train smash and there are alternatives. I have been using Ubuntu One as a fairly hassle-free cloud backup service but didn't really use it to share files across platforms.

I just wish that a native Google Drive app was available for Linux.

True, one can be easily mislead by the open source software they provide. Though I just read that they're not even close to making profit, apparently within 5 years they make break even.

HAHA, our price is 50% of that of amazon & google wholesale and we have no problems with profit.

Seems they are incapable of keeping with the times and technologies, shame.

Nice, 100 Bokke for a TB per month. Getting some of that.

Well you can use this tool for the time being.

I also got the email. I have 13 GB worth of drop box space, of which I use less than 3 gb , so for now I am sorted.

@DWPTA, thanks I will try it.

I stopped using that after the boxDropped its security (numerous DB accounts details were stolen/compromised).

It's been on their blog since 2nd April (https://one.ubuntu.com/blog/).

"However, like any company, we want to focus our efforts on our most important strategic initiatives and ensure we are not spread too thin." In other words, not enough people paying to use the service. If they were making enough money out of it, it would be an important strategic initiative. Pity.
