Hey guys, so I recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 onto my pc (I know 10.10 is out but I don't have the iso so I thought id just wait for 11.04). Anyway I thought I'd ask around and see what apps and commands you guys would think are good to put onto a fresh machine. I've already done restricted extra's and compwiz manager with wine and play on Linux high on my list for another time. Is there anything else out there that I should be made aware of.

Would be great if you could point me in the direction of software to get my nokia x6 working on it and my webcam and printer?

Also would be helpful if you could recommend the best local server to use for updates and such.

there's a thread here with a list of apps. i thikn it is more general linux related but you should still be able to get those apps on ubuntu. can't remember what it is titled.

Tucan for managing downloads from MegaUpload, RapidShare etc
Tilda for onscreen terminal
Chromium for browser
SABnzbd+ for news hosts
Transmission for torrents
X-Chat for IRC
AcetoneISO for cd/dvd image management

IM not in my Ubuntu boot at the moment, is SABnzbd+ a nzb downloader? Like Altbinz in windows?

Yah, except you access the interface via your browser, it works as a client server thingy.

@ponder: thanks for tucan heads up, that's new to me :-)

Also, if you need to edit text much, and don't like the existing editors, the Window$ textmate lookalike, Sublime Text, is now being ported to Linux, there is a ppa for ubuntu here http://ppa.webupd8.org/tagged/sublime_text_2 (non free, but evaluation is fully functional and does not expire)

Yip and it's the dogs bollocks. You interface to it via a web browser. There is a GTK GUI in the works called LottaNZB but the web interface rocks.
It runs on Linux, OS X & Windows and who knows what else. You can also remotely access it via WAN if you so desire.

Im looking at nzb software for Ubuntu, SABnzb+ and LottaNZB seem to both be good choices, has anyone tried them and know which would be better?

Also, Im trying to figure out what would be the simplest method would be to mount a second partition at start up. I keep all my data on a separate partition so I may get to it from both Ubuntu and Windows. I tried the fstab method but want to keep the shortcut on my desktop to..

Once I get that partition working again (bad update) I will do so.
