Ubuntu server and desktop recommendations.

@Jan you missed this one!

Reaching for the install ISO every time is a cop-out, you can keep doing it in your lab, but not in the real world. You need to have the fortitude to see a problem through until it's fixed.
I actually had to do this at work a couple of months ago - some weird issue with an Ubuntu VM where it just kind of couldn't connect to the virtual nic (IIRC.) After several hours of Googling and troubleshooting I wasn't really any closer to the cause of the problem and time was marching on so I did a clean install and copied the config and data over.

It actually reminded me that of all the Linux VM's and open source apps I have deployed over the years, mostly they sit there running away with minimal intervention required. In that sense, although I'm generally quite comfortable managing Linux, I don't generally need to go to deep into what is happening under the hood.

i know is gonna be dangerous what i am about to ask ...so her goes.As you know i need some training so i am willing to give my home server log in details and ssh details to you guys and install server stuff, then break something and then ask me to fix it,this is real world sys admin stuff.Do things like move files create **** and let me try and fix it....the thing is who do i trust so if someone is willing do take some time to install vms and dockers and wordpress etc.I did install a gui on the server and i think a gui manager also, so there is 2 i think the one is mint and the other xdfe.
who is up for the challenge..ready steady ...go

Start your own group and then invite people to attend.
The Linux guru in Cape Town is @ginggs .
The Debian project manager is also there but I forgot his name.

Edit: Real nerds use Debian. Lazy gits use Ubuntu and noobs use Mint.

Jokes aside, Mint is the only one where hardware always works first time, every time.
will contact him, thank you so much.

If you want to break things just leave Wordpress loaded on a public facing IP.

Server World has some OK walk-throughs for a beginner setting up a Linux server. https://www.server-world.info/en/. Just pick your OS from the OS configs at the top of the page.

Sometimes there are some funny things here, but overall it gives some structure to the process.

is it possible to know all linux terminal commands and switches.I am sure some of you in the workplace go to man or help, surely you cant remeber everything. That will take years

Ok i dont know what you guys think about this concept.I do not want a vm on the same pc i am practicing.I want to sysadmin a pc that is like separate and on a network. This is my setup i am gonna do tonight when loadshedding ends..lol
first laptop-install ubuntu server and set it up then install a gui on it
second laptop- install ubuntu desktop
third laptop install ubuntu and dual boot with windows 10.
I will then hook the 2 laptops up to router via lan and not wifi.
This will be my testing ground. If there is anything you wish me to do on these 3 laptops please advise.
Thank you

purchase an intel nuc , and you will be able to run multiple vms on one physical machine.Use virtual box or vmware workstation. You can isolate your vms from your host machines network.

No-one remembers them. Learn bash and create scripts. That way you have easy reuse.

Learning bash is the first thing to master.

Intel nuc is the best. But use a headless version of debian bullseye and load cockpit-machines.

But if you real hardcore use libvirt natively.

got 2 intel nucs , monster power in those small pcs.Running esxi on the 1 nuc , and the other nuc is running vmware workstation. Each machine has 64GB ram and NVME SSD so got proper grunt.

Flavour of the month is https://xcp-ng.org/ - I need NFV so I typically use nspawn and if that doesn't work a plain libvirt. I typically have 4GB RAM and 32GB SSD.

Heard about this recently on a podcast - to learn SSH :

Wargames

The wargames offered by the OverTheWire community can help you to learn and practice security concepts in the form of fun-filled games.

To find out more about a certain wargame, just visit its page linked from the menu on the left.

If you have a problem, a question or a suggestion, you can join us via chat.

Suggested order to play the games in

Bandit

Leviathan or Natas or Krypton

Narnia

Behemoth

Utumno

Maze

Each shell game has its own SSH port

Information about how to connect to each game using SSH, is provided in the top left corner of the page. Keep in mind that every game uses a different SSH port.

i like it i am on level 2 going to 3 but it seems my password dont work eve nthough i use cat ./ to read the dash file
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXi....this password not working. ok i see you need to put in bandit2 to ssh.
This is fun learning but time consuming.

That’s why you need to have a fundamental understanding of man and how it works so you reference anything you can’t remember.

It’s why man exists.

But your misconception here is that people didn’t take years to become experts in their field. It doesn’t happen overnight, that’s why experience counts.

Learning bash is the first thing to master.

Learning to take notes is the first thing to master.

Then you always have a reference to what you already know.
