I thought mint was becoming popular :)

Can see the enthusiasm around it with people everywhere.

Who can't do without a good Linux!

hmmm,
I think why people are suddenly moving towards other distos' is that when gnome-shell and unity came out they were not polished.
I mean, gnome-shell is better if you add the gnome-tweak package, but i think that that should not have been the case. Gnome should have come out with the tweaks and all, same goes for unity.

I do think that after a couple of years people will embrace gnome-shell and unity.
What's lols is that people who are using ubuntu for the 1st time say that unity/gnome-shell is awesome. xD
That's why I'm sticking to my 10.04 until support ends or until unity and the gnome-shell matures
:)

People always hate what they don't know :D At first Unity really annoyed me, I even tried Kubuntu instead, but all those spelling errors drove me crazy. So after going back to Ubuntu I got use to Unity after a couple of days. Now with the changes in 11.10 I love it.

You can run Android with a mouse and keyboard.... In fact Toshiba has a little netbook that runs Android

Well the Eee Book dock comes with a touch pad and USB mouse support. Still will not use it for my Desktop or servers than you very much.

I prefer a windowed environment where I can have applications open next to each other.

Your Gnome 3 is still there and you can select which "fripperies?" you want to enable via the gnome-tweak-tool, in my case a small selection of favourites in the top panel and, the biggie, 12 (stacked 4 by 3) fixed workspaces in the bottom panel. 2 mouse clicks to open a new terminal in a selected workspace :D

Why not use GNU Screen (command: screen)? One terminal to rule them all.
I like to keep things on one screen. Just like tabs in a browser, things can easily become unproductive with too many workspaces.

Different strokes for different folks :D

Actually its been years since I last used screen (or seen a dumb terminal for that matter) and I was surprised to find that it's still maintained - 64bit as well.

Remember as well, if you want a rock solid stable, bug fixed interface then stick u with a LTS release of Ubuntu and not a Technical Release like 10.10, 11.04, or 11.10. Unity in 12.04LTS will be a much better experience.

Not holding my breath for 12.04.

I'll check it out when it's released but Ubuntu is very much on my back burner these days, it'll take rave reviews from the community before I invest any more time in it :(

I don't want to start a new thread, and seeing there is some unity bashing in this thread, you may find this amusing (especially the comments!):
http://www.flynsarmy.com/2011/04/why-i-hate-unity/

Read that and the comments. Sad that Canonical aren't willing to budge on the Unity issue. I tried it when it was released and only succeeded in crashing it to a command prompt. Mint worked out the box. Debian as well.

Maybe they will relent and get rid of Unity, admit they messed up and get back some of their user base. We'll see...

With the choice between Gnome3 on Debian or Unity on Ubuntu, I went KDE on Debian - something I thought I would never do.

I doubt it, they are targeting the cell phone interface generation and new users. Many other options out there, I switched to XFCE on my desktop and my underpowered notebook will always run Openbox.

There's also a new lightweight QT based DE out called Razor-Qt, http://www.webupd8.org/2011/12/razor...ktop.html#more but I'll start a new thread on that.

I can now understand why Ubuntu slipped to 4th place....Unity is a big ol' mess.

Installed it today to understand what all the gripes were about & now I fully understand. It's bad. Really bad.

Never ever did I struggle so much to find basic and advanced OS system settings, struggled to change the default internet browser, etc. Nothing feels like it is logically laid out, everything is all over the place.

The question that I keep asking myself.....who in his/her right mind signed this off as an OS for humans?

OMG, I tried Unity for the 1st time today. WTF were the developers thinking.
I agree with this guy:http://www.flynsarmy.com/2011/04/why-i-hate-unity/
Even though the article is a bit old. some of the points are valid.
I don't want to spend endless time trying to find this and that or have to change settings etc, it slows down productivity.
Same goes for gnome.
I'm really putting off using gnome-shell and unity.
I tried the other DE's but BLEH.....
sticking to 10.04 until support ends

The Self-Appointed Benevolent Dictator for Life (sabdfl) himself, Mark Shuttleworth.
