'UCT prof' stabbed to death

I hope they catch the b@stards who did it and throw them in a deep dark cell forever, they do not deserve to mix with the rest of humanity anymore.

If caught they'll get an average of 7 years, because the government
isn't serious about fighting violent crime.

The deceased man was apparently on his way from an ethics meeting,
where animal experimentation was discussed. That just made me wonder,
with all the violent crime going on in this country, why are universities even
wasting their time on such matters. While they can do very little about violent crime - other than push the government and attempt to exert
pressure via international channels - I think that there are far more
important priorities in this country than bunny experiments.

Don't think it had much to do with his work. The report on TV claimed the area had become steadily more dangerous, with muggings more frequent.

Absolutely nothing to do with his work. :(

Ja, too many random gangsters around, it's happening all over the Southern Suburbs.

Need help!

The victim of this crime, Prof. Mike Larkin (of UCT but formerly of Wits), was one of South Africa's leading authorities on corporate and commercial law. He was a close friend of mine, and on numerous occasions spent considerable time --- once, an entire 3-day "long weekend" --- researching with/for me (without charging any fee etc) questions of law relevant to ongoing litigation against Telkom. I also have affidavit evidence, given by him, which will (in all probability) eventually be used in the litigation against Telkom.

Although most members of this forum may not have heard of him, the death of Prof. Larkin constitutes a major loss to us. It also, in my view, represents a considerable loss to South Africa. He was one of the kindest and most considerate men I have ever met, and a complete gentleman in the best old-fashioned sense of that word, as well as being a distinguished scholar and teacher.

I feel absolutely numbed by the horrible news of his murder in Cape Town.

:(

was always a pleasure to work with you and i hope that all is at peace with you mike

I grew up around there and now live about 2 min away from Roslyn.
TH problem stems from the Liesbeek river walkway.
It is totally unpoliced and infested with opportunistic criminal types. I used to walk my dog regularly down there (really pretty and leafy with the mill on the far side) and on a number of occasions I ran into dodgy looking types who didn't hassle me most likely because of my vicious looking mutt. If they'd employ a couple of guys to patrol that walkway on bicycles and keep it clear (i.e.: no loitering) the number of muggings ion that area would drop drastically.

I hope you also PM the guys!

Liesbeek River is nice but a crime area. A friend of mine was mugged there in Newslands, fortunately he wasn't harmed, but they got all his stuff.

Some policing would be very welcome along this public green space.

There is a distinct lack of interest from the Metro Police as well as the Council's own Law Enforcement section. They just never respond - to anything!

I called them once about people sleeping around the library, aggressive begging, drug taking, washing in public, pooing on the pavement. No change.

A police van even just drove by as if it were the most normal scene in the world. - Shocking!

Another of SA's brightest snuffed out for nothing. Only another 3.99 million whites remaining to murder.

The ANC is responsible for this atrocity. They should be removed from office because they are unable to govern SA properly.
