Udemy - Unity Game Development

Looked at it, seems like a lot of fun if I just had the time...

Anyone here doing any of these courses? Lately I've become a bit curios about game development. I think it would be a nice hobby and something I could enjoy. How helpful did you find the course? If not through Udemy then any other suggestions are welcome.

The thing with Unity is that trying to build up knowledge about creating all types of games is a huge task, and techniques to apply change even in minor updates.

I would recommend to aim super low. Build a simple throw-away 2D game. YouTube has plenty of tutorials on building very specific features. As you do this, you'll learn the basics which will transfer to other types of games.

I'm building a silly platformer with physics simulation which is different to the normal 2d platformers where velocities are directly manipulated. Learnt a lot about collisions, prefabs and instantiating, transforms and the object model, skeletal animation... I found that I learnt much better by experimenting since I also know what is not possible.

Thanks guys and GoB that is great advice.

Build your own engine - it’s the best way to learn game development.

Imagine building a near perfect AI game engine. I saw an episode of Stargate like this, they enter a first person shooter simulation in which they can only exit if they win the round and with each round it learns all of their tactics and gets better and better. The others bailed out of fear until eventually Tealc got trapped. Was a great episode. If I could Id build something like that

McGyver could build it...
