UEFA Champions League 2013/14 Thread

This is the point- four years and not a sniff of even a final appearance at the least. I would hardly call that sufficient standard- Arsenal are one of the teams that just make up the numbers.

UEFA should reward teams for making progress, not for stagnating, which is why they should rework their seeding system.

Haha...was Dortmund not making it out of the group stages the year before was performing at a sufficient standard then.

You want a system where teams are seeded according to your opinion of them, without taking into account any facts. I get it now.

Of course not. Finishing bottom was terrible.

No, I want a seeding system where the points allocations match the progress made by the teams. At the moment, it just enables a status quo. I made factual proposals of what I would change, because certain allocations disadvantage some teams while benefiting others.

Does it make sense that a team earns more points for playing in a CL group game, regardless of result, than a knockout game? Does it make sense that a lower ranked team does not earn more points for beating a higher ranked opponent? Does it make sense that Arsenal, United and Chelsea have a higher coefficient this season than Bayern, or that Atletico Madrid have a higher coefficient than all of them? It's silly in a number of areas.

They use 5 years which is a long time in football these days, I'll concede that. But you can't simply say that because Dortmund reached a final they must suddely be in pot 1.

Then you'll have a situation that Chelsea who ended third in their group should be in pot 3. You can't have both ways.

I didn't say suddenly though. The changes would obviously take time to implement in an ideal world, because the current status quo already exists. And I wasn't against the five year period, just the metrics they awarded points for over the five years.

In their CL group? It would indicate how they performed. I wouldn't complain.

Excellent observation.

But the closer you look at how Uefa calculates the coefficient from which it ranks and then seeds clubs, the clearer it becomes that it is likely to preserve the status quo.

Every club's results in European competition over the past five years are counted equally, with no weighting to favour the most recent seasons - so the seeding reflects long-term consistency, rather than rewarding recent excellence.

Whether you think it is fair probably depends on which club you support and which country you come from.

City seem to have woken up in the second half. Might be a bit more of a game now.,

Pity Bayern aren't playing man utd. They tearing apart the team that destroyed Utd.

Lol. For someone who accuses everyone else about being obsessed with LFC, you really are obsessed with United.

The butthurt is strong with this one..

Shame poor oke. He can't watch Liverpool play on a Tuesday/Wednesday night so he has to watch United instead :)

In Alan's defense I was actually wondering the same thing. What United with it's current form would look like against a team like Bayern. Bayern drilling City, while City drilled United.

However you can hardly ever make comparisons like that. It doesn't really work like that.

I don't have to wonder what Arsenal would look like against Bayern, since we beat them 2-0 away last time we played. :p:D

Of course it works that way. Would have been 10 - 0 to Bayern :p

As for obsession. My posts in Man Utd thread 91(24th) Randhir's in LFC threads 1064( 3rd) :erm:

See :D Obsessed.

I see Hart is getting some stick this morning. Goalkeeper's confidence is a fragile thing. Will be interesting to see if he can turn things around.

Clichy's defending for Muller's goal was just WTF. Made me think of cricket when the ball is past a fielder and he raises his arm signaling someone else to collect it.

He's been crap for around a season now. He just doesn't get that much flack because he was England's golden boy. He gets beaten from outside the box so often it's unreal.
