Short article I wrote on the increase to UIF contributions.

At the end of March 2016, the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) delared an accummulated surplus of R99 billion rand. It is estimated that the surplus would reach R175 billion by 2019. The UIF announced that they would utilise this surplus to protect existing jobs and will introduce new rules to allow more people to qualify as beneficiaries of the fund.

Other amendments being contemplated to reduce this surplus is to cover an expansion to the existing Training Layoff Scheme as well as funding the "labour activation plan". This is the register of jobseekers kept at the Department of Labour offices to be matched with registered job openings.

The current amendments below was signed into law earlier this year:

1. Benefits will now be paid out over 12 months and not eight months.
2. Learners in training and civil servants will now also qualify to claim.
3. Maternity Benefits increases from 54% to 66% of the salary.
4. UIF benefits will not be stopped when a beneficiary dies but will be paid out to their dependents.

None of these changes will however make a dent to the surplus and it is surprising that the UIF amount has been increased.

It would be interesting to see how the Department of Labour utilises the surplus over the next year and what interventions they fund that will alleviate the unemployment problem facing South Africa.

Edit: The maximum contributions remians unchanged and only the limits for benefits ahas increased.

Now the Zuptas know about all these surplus billions, they’ll find a scheme to capture this department and put it in the hands of cadres. They’ll probably use the 'ethical' card to justify the redistribution of this 'trapped' wealth into social upliftment schemes which are tender rigged. Watch and see.

So then use your head and use that surplus by creating trade workshops to help the unemployed youth to gain experience in their choice of trade and to help the economy grow and reduce unemployment.

How about making it easier to claim and sort out the offices. If you've ever had to sit at one for hours on end to actually claim this it's a nightmare.

please assist with help regarding employees uif deductions:

1)regular overtime, they work overtime every week , the whole year through, due to being in the petrol industry
2) they get 2 weeks holiday pay in december , this is a compulsory payment to workers who belong to mibco (motor industry bargaining council). they are at work and get paid their normal pay plus the 2 weeks holiday pay.

is uif deductible in each case ?
