Can anyone give me some feedback around this process, and if there are any gotchas we need to look out for?

I see there is an online account registration. Has anyone completed the online registration, or do we still need to submit the documentation and what not manually at a labour centre?

The online process should be quite smooth and painless. Their systems allow you to submit all documentation electronically, and as long as your wife's UIF and tax details are up to date it should work well.

We eventually received my wife's entire maternity benefit without once setting foot in a labour office, but it was anything but quick and smooth. Her part-time employer of near a decade ago never filed her contributions properly, so we had a 3 month run-around to get everything sorted. One tidbit of advice: ensure, from day one, that the bank account you nominate is in your wife's name and her name only. The initial submission allows for joint accounts, but the entire UIF system goes for a loop further down the line.
 
Celine or someone posted a very good detailed thread about UIF. I think it was claiming for unemployment though but it was very informative. Will see if I can find it.

we used a company to do it for us.
Waiting for payout but I felt worth it to get someone to do it rather than me sit in queues

I would agree with the comment about the system being messed up.

Ufiling has been in place for over 18 months but many employers dont know how to use it, or that they are supposed to be using it. Dept of labour is accepting applications for maternity benefits from places like momsuifassit and the rest but they cant do much becuase dept has to process these applications at the same time as having to or trying to catch up with the backlog.

We had to go thru this last year and it is a pain.

I would suggest getting one of these companies or service providers to do it. Follow up with them as to which office they submitted to docs to and get the names of the people in charge at that office, along with their contact details. And then follow up with them.

No idea.
We used an agency type company that checks everything for you and does the submissions

From the headache we had with that, it seems a fickle process

For maternity benefits?

For UIF benefits it was painless and surprising efficient.

We tired to do my wife's claim online at www.ufiling.co.za but there were some complications. They wanted additional forms to be completed and faxed to a number that remained engaged all the time (tired to fax it to them for 2 weeks). We tired to email it to them but they did not confirm receipt. Our online application got canceled as a result. BTW It took them 5 months to get back to us on this email. We emailed them in May and they only responded in October :rolleyes: We also phoned them on several occasions and spoke to impatient and incompetent call center staff each time.

We were running out of time. Once your baby turns 6 months, you are no longer allowed to submit a claim. I looked around for a agency to handle it for us. I found that www.momslink.co.za had good reviews. They went out of their way to help us. I would definitely recommend them to anyone. It took some effort to get all the forms together, but it was totally worth it. Our claim was submitted successfully.
