Some hilarious incompetence on display. And I thought our education standards couldn't go any lower.

Source: Daily Mail

Chris Coombs, 15, noticed the mistake in the 30-second government-funded advert, which is regularly shown on Channel 4 and ITV.

The clip shows a teacher writing '(g2)7 = g?' on a whiteboard and later 'solving' it with the answer 'g2 x g7'.

But the correct answer for the algebraic equation is g14 - or g2 x g2 x g2 x g2 x g2 x g2 x g2.

Year 10 pupil Chris, who attends the John Cabot Academy in Bristol, criticised the advert and called for it to be amended as soon as possible.

He said: 'I was disappointed to notice that the mathematical calculation is inaccurate.

'The workings the teacher is writing on the interactive whiteboard would not answer the question correctly.

But producers claimed the scene shown is of the teacher deliberately demonstrating an incorrect answer.

She later went on to explain the correct workings and answer, but this was not shown in the short clip, they claim.

What? Is the ANC running maths programs on UK television??

EDIT: Omac, you beat me to it. lol

Whilst I would usually join in on the ANC bashing, I'm a little confused. It clearly says "UK Boy from John Cabott Academy Bristol", it was an advert aired on Channel 4 & ITV - these are UK TV channels I presume and the article seems to come from a UK based website, so unless the ANC has taken control of England, I don't know how they can be blamed (this time)!

Maybe you can blame your English literature classes on the ANC for your poor comprehension of this article?

Hmmm whats the problem here? Was the short version aired or the entire version?

Dont take the ANC bashing out of context! You clearly misunderstood their criticism :) Agents!

Personally I think education standards are falling world wide It is not only a problem in SA (I know that the education standards in the Netherlands for example are not what they used to be)

To be honest, I don't really see a fault in the advert. In school we used to learn to do our math in "steps" and once we were more experienced we could skip the more trivial steps. Well g2 x g7 would indeed equal g14 if you bother to take it one step further which is a step that might not have been shown in the advert.

Incorrect.

g2 x g7 = (g x g) x (g x g x g x g x g x g x g) = g(2+7) = g9

(g2)7 = (g x g)7 = (g x g) x (g x g) x (g x g) x (g x g) x (g x g) x (g x g) x (g x g) = g(2x7) = g14

It's a commercial, who actually decides to solve math problems for a COMMERCIAL, that's like calling in on those fake telephone numbers they give in the movies and complaining to why it isn't working...and then trying to correct it.

That should be fairly easy for them to prove. It's not impossible this was an editing mistake.

They claim to have filmed actual teachers teaching.
