My fathers friend in the UK emailed me to say he'd just hooked up to broadband after a couple years on unmetered dial up.

I thought I'd post the email here. Ted is 78 years old and loving the internet.

"As you know I was with Freeserve, which cost me a total of £14.90 per month. Freeserve were taken over by Wanadoo and I have now gone onto Broadband with Wanadoo which costs me £17.90 per month, all in!! Which in real terms is 75p per week extra, less than half a pint of beer, for which I get a faster service and frees up the telephone line, so Marion can use the phone at the same time as I am using the computor. On top of that as an added incentive from Wanadoo I get the first six months free. All in all I am quite happy with it and it was very straight forward to set up.
All the best
Ted "

First six months free! I don't think we are ever going to get to this stage. I think for £17.90 he gets at least 30 GBs , probably on a 1 Meg line.

Sigh:mad:

Right now in the UK you can get unlimited 1Mb for £9.99/month, and they have just started rolling out their unlimited 22Mb lines for £29.99/month

Yes only a 2Gb cap but how would you like to pay for the same in SA R200, and an extra Gb at R10?! Make sense? Oh and it's a 1Mbit connection.

Dont misunderstand - compared to here its brilliant but compared to what else is over there its nothing special. Virgin offers similar packages aimed at low usage.

Fully agreed, but the "value added services" and the package as a whole is quite good. No to brag, but I've been connected with Be, www.bethere.co.uk since september, on ADSL2+ and the system flies with connection speeds bt. 16-18Mbits, no capping, no limits. £23.99 per month.

Yea our pensioners are forced to read books and do alot off boring stuff like bingo argg

Interesting replies, I can suggest alternates for access. I am sure though the 6 months free grabs people , even for 2gbs

Apparently that 2GB is a "CAP". My aunt in the UK was on some 10GB option or something, downgraded to the 2GB and then still never got capped. Apparently when they called the CC service they were told that that "CAP" is the acceptable usage in the package but users may use up to 10GB (or something like that) before recieving a warning phone call to turn it down.... or at least that's how I remember it ;)

This is the package:

8 Mb! 800% more than Telkom can squeeze out in SA. Why is the governemnt allowing them to be a monopoly? Remind me again please? Was it profound ability to deliver? Naahh.. probably just because government owns them...

I've been thinking... it's cheaper to live in the UK and communicate with your relatives in South Africa than to live next door and use the phone... And you have the advantage of not living next door to your inlaws... sounds like a win-win to me!
