Hi guys,
I'm currently a student at UKZN but I don't find myself going to many lectures and I'm still doing really well at all my subjects, it's a 100km trip each day to UKZN for me (50km each way) and I was thinking about moving over to UNISA, can anyone tell me how this would affect my career one day? I was thinking about finishing my BSC at UNISA and then going back to a physical university (maybe Tuks) to do my honors. Obviously if this is going to be detrimental to my employability I would rather stick with UKZN. Any opinions would be appreciated.

Thanks

OK so I'll tone the question down to just if the Bsc Computing at unisa is a respectable degree?

Yes Ghost, it's a perfectly fine degree. The standard is probably exactly the same as you'd get at Tuks and elsewhere. The modules are almost identical.

Thanks for the reply, will speak to them about gaining credits for UKZN modules tomorrow. Do you guys think 1st year compsci modules would be transferable if done in a different language? Java vs C++

Hi, I would like to do the opposite transfer. Can anyone with the experience of transferring from UNISA to UKZN help me with how to go about doing this.

Best to meet up with the HoD and ask what modules are recognised IMO.

Since I'm studying an Accounting Bcompt degree. Currently wrapping up my first year modules. You say "HOD", I assume you're talking about the UKZN HOD of Accounting?

I'm at one of the big 4 and there are plenty of people working here who have studied (or are studying through) Unisa. Employment shouldn't be an issue.

However if you're going to go the Unisa route, then make the most of it. Don't just sit at home because it saves you the drive - try and get into the job market ASAP so that you will already have a few years of working experience by the time you graduate.

I transferred from UNISA to UCT back in 2001. They do credit you for courses you've already done, but the course material isn't exactly the same so it can get a little bit confusing. I had to effectively redo a couple of courses which were very similar to what I had done because they weren't credited while I struggled with a couple of 2nd year courses where I was credited for the 1st year course at UNISA, but it didn't cover the same foundations as the UCT equivalent so I had to do a lot of catch-up.

The different language wasn't a big issue, I was credited even though it was a different language. The only issue will be if they have a 2nd or 3rd year course and you have to catch up on the language. If they only do it in one year, then there aren't any worries.

Typically, I find the level of UNISA to be lower than the full-time universities as people are expected to complete it after-hours while working. When we hire people, it is one of the things I look at. If someone studied at UNISA, they should have been getting work experience at the same time. That shows me they understand time management and they would have probably learned more from the degree as they would be able to apply it in the work place.
