Ultimate PC - your recommendations

Thanks for all the input - some clarifications.

1. Budget is 50K - monitors not required.

2. Have a special prediliction towards Adaptec SAS controllers which need a PCI Express 8x slot - do any of these motherboards support both PCI-e 8x for peripheral cards AND PCI-e 16x for graphics ? I know that most server boards don't have the 16x support for the graphics card.

3. Which operating system will allow me to see 6 or 12Gb of RAM and yet be stable ? I have had excellent performance stability with Win 2K and Win 2003 Server (though limited to 3Gb / 4Gb ram), but XP and VISTA seemed much slower with the same hardware. Is Windows 7 an option ?

4. I know that SAS SCSI was due for an upgrade to higher throughput - has this happened yet ?

5. Will a XEON not be wasted on the fact that most of my work is graphics based ? I sometimes work with huge files - 1Gb and larger.

6. In reviews I've seen regarding SSD's (places like tom's hardware), they say that the SSD performance degrades very rapidly as it becomes fragmented, and that even after defragging it, and even reformatting it, they could never get back to the original performance it has when still new.

7. Does Windows 7 support win 2k programs, or should I run a virtual machine within Win 7 of win 2k ?

8. If my choice is between blinding speed with mediocre stability, or good speed with incredible stability, I choose incredible stability.

Yea, maybe ssd's of old but i have had both mine for a long time now and they run fast. Incredibly fast actually.

I do not think you have seen speed until you raid 2 ssd's :D, for 50k that is pretty much a must.

Windows 7 64-bit will take all the ram you need and run rock solid, and the OS itself has TRIM which protects SSDs from wearing out. It is unquestionably your best choice of OS.

I'm not sure you need a Xeon, no - for your purposes an i7 or i9 would be better suited. The main bulk of that extra money should go into your hard drive config - as I suggested, perhaps 2x256gb in Raid0 striped array plus 4 or 5 1.5tb NAS drives.

Additionally you may want to consider a workstation graphics card which may offer more benefit than a xeon processor.

Windows 7 doesn't support win2k but it's a piece of cake with virtualbox or whatever.

"Money is no object"-Wish i could say that:D. I would say you must go look at buying guides from places like tomshardware , bit-tech and guru3d.They always have like one buying guide for people where money is no object.

"Price is no object" and "Dollars is no object" are slightly different. :D

Man, do I wish I could also say that. Need ... to ... work ... harder! :D

The 2 x 42" are from Mustek - R 7K each - have HMDI inputs as well as VGA. Got Convertor Cables from Cablelink from HDI to HDMI - am running the monitors at 1920 x 1200. If running from the VGA port, can also run 1680 x 1280, but not from the HDI ports for some reason.

When someone comes into my office, I can just about see the top of their heads over the monitor.

As for the "money being no object part", it's only taken me 20 years to get to this point - started my business when I was 19 out of my bedroom..............

Just a question - what brand SSD's do you recommend ? Who to buy them from ?

I would buy a Corsair or an Intel SSD personally. Last I checked Intel had the fastest on the market but also incredibly expensive.

Then it is well deserved. BTW, what's your business?

Do you have an account with Mustek?

lol.. he mentioned the size of the screens in the OP, so if you take my question in context it think is is sufficient ... but I suppose the question was a bit frank ;)

Ultimate PC - Monitors

The Monitors are LCD's. M42PHW is the model.

Yes I do have an account with Mustek. I stated buying from them, when they 1st startup up - used to buy from High-Tech in those days.

Got out of selling and supplying PC's in 2000 (not enough margin to cover all the hassles). I've been in the fortunate position where as I got bored of a particular market, and it's profitability dropped, I've been able to move to another market.

Currently I sell business opportunities.
