Id recommend a Ati 5970, were giving one away in a competition. www.rampage-gaming.co.za
Get some of those pci express ssd cards. That should take you up abit.
Intel Core I7 920
12GB of DDR3 1600mhz Ram
1x 128 GB SSD (For OS)
X amount of normal HDD’s (1.5TB) for long term storage (you choose the variable X) (raid 5 recommended)
ATI 4870
Antec P150 (Simple Yet elegant)
ASUS Mobo (with appropriate socket)
Unfortunately I am writing this at school and the internet is extremely slow so I am having difficulties pulling up price lists. If you want the exact cost I can find them however it should be easy enough with the above list.
Best of luck,
Andrew
All right,
I am going to be frank and just bluntly say that everyone except for about two people in this thread have a brain. Why have I come to this conclusion this you may wonder? Well simplistically it is in the answers to this man’s question.
His description on what he wants to do is as far from GAMING as it gets and people have not grasped that concept. I know as a fact that I love gaming computers, I recommend them, I love to build them, however let’s be practical. He needs a computer that is reliable and can perform under stress. Not graphical stress but typical application stress.
In all due respect, money is always an issue. Trust me, you don't want to spend over 50K on a computer, because the Price for performance margin drops dramatically and for what you need, you need to spend at most 25k even less.
2x GTX 295's, and i7 Extreme? Are you sodding mad? These are high performance gaming components. For a workstation as they call it, you would most likely favor RAM over graphical power. 4870 or the 4850 can run 2x 42 inch plasmas easily or even go to the green side and get a GTX 275, or even a GTX 260. These are all valuable options that won’t break the bank. Having firsthand experience with 2x GTX 295's all I can say is that for gaming they shine, but other than that there really is no point for them.
On top of that a Core i7 920 will suffice with more than enough power for you and it will last you for 10 years, trust me. Don’t bother with a cool box that says “extreme” it’s a marketing tactic for the no brainers. You do not need a high performance motherboard, one that is basic and can handle up to 24GB of ram would be nice, and however 12GB of ram is perfect again for what you need. If you want a minimal non noticeable performance increase in the OS and with file access then go SSD, however in my honest opinion I would not do this. At the moment it’s a waste of money. Normal HDD are still perfectly fine and they work. As all computer geeks will say “if it isn’t broke don’t fix it”. So all in all here is what I recommend.

Thanks child... get back to class now.
When you 20 years of industry experience then come back.
Maybe you need to go to school again? Just a hunch.... (see above quote and spot abnormality)
Thanks Frag, finally someone who sees the realism of the situation!
Indeed a server motherboard and processor would be ideal but it really steps the price up in my opinion. Rather go with an I7 because it has incredible potential. Also yes one of Nivida's work station cards would be super!

Young man did you see the OP?
Let me scream it at you.
MONEY IS NO OBJECT. Now i come back to your comment about all the brainless people recommending very high spec pc's and then i read your above post about a motherboard and processor adding to the cost when quite clearly MONEY IS NO OBJECT was mentioned. I could say something in regards to the no brains comment but i will wait for you to stop sucking your thumb.
