So I'm going for a full abdominal and pelvic ultrasound tomorrow. Anybody had one of these before? Are they going to coat my whole abdomen with the goopy stuff?

I have. I volunteered for it on a lark when visiting Pretoria Medical School (or whatever its called now).

It was actually rather fascinating and there was no discomfort whatsoever.

And if your heart sounds like it's pumping custard, don't panic ... I was told that mine sounded perfectly normal.

Oh and yeah I think the you always need the gel though I could be wrong...

I've got, as the doctor calls it: "Reoccurring abdominal pains." They've already ruled out the common stuff like IBS etc.

Seriously though , happened to a mate of mine. For some reason he had a chronic build-up of intestinal gas and landed up having to take charcoal tablets. Tell you what... he could strip paint off the walls once he eventually did get some relief
