Does anyone need anymore proof that the UN is corrupt organisation? Offering a tyrant a 'generous retirement'... :twisted:

The head of the United Nations offered Robert Mugabe a lucrative retirement package in an overseas haven if he stood down as Zimbabwe's president, according to claims quoted in leaked diplomatic cables.

The extraordinary offer was allegedly made by Kofi Annan, who was then the UN secretary general, at the millennium summit of world leaders in New York, according to a memo drawn up by American officials which was obtained by the WikiLeaks website.

The memo, written in September 2000, records a meeting between a US embassy official in Harare and a senior source in the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), the party opposed to Mugabe's Zanu-PF.

According to the MDC source, whose name the Observer has redacted, "Kofi Annan, in the recent meeting in New York during the millennium summit offered Mugabe a deal to step down. Although [the MDC source] said the MDC was not privy to the details, he surmised that Annan's supposed deal probably included provision of safe haven and a financial package from Libyan president [Gaddafi]. The opposition party heard that Mugabe turned down the offer the following day after discussing it with the first lady."

I wouldn't call that corruption, I would call it a damned good attempt at getting rid of the SOD without actually bumping him off....plus playing to one of his biggest weaknesses and that is the accumulation of wealth for his exclusive use.

So he should get rewarded for dismantling the Zimbabwean economy and for murdering thousands of white farmers and MDC supporters? No, he should be tried at the International Criminal Court. Where's the justice in letting off a person scott-free?

This would not be the first time that a dictator gets off scott free. Doesn't SA provide asylum for 1 or 2?
 
The problem is that it is not Mugabe alone who is the problem. They will have to "retire" his entire group of generals and close "confidants" and this will never happen peacefully.

O dude where is the justice for bush, turned iraq into nothing but a civil war and killed thousands of innocent people. Yet he just published a book.

Wake the F up, life is not fair. Instead of looking at this negativily we should be thankful that the US was trying to helping Zimbabwe more than we can say about their fellow brothers all across africa.
 
Well the ICC prosecuted Milosevic and are busy prosecuting al-bashir. I wonder what makes Mugabe so special...

How about they offer this package to the first person who successfully kills him.
 
Here's a very easy way to get rid of Mugabe... get rid of her royal Highness Grace, since she's the real cancer eating away at Zimbabwe. "Agter elke man", after all.
 
You gotta be pretty simple to think this is corruption.

The same thing happened with Idi Amin and Ferdinand Marcos. Think more please!

It can be argued whether or not it's corrupt, but it is pretty messed up that he would get rewarded for what he's done. He should be assassinated, not given a fancy retirement.
The bastard's already had a long life that he never deserved.

Actually theres a bigger picture. Saving the country and its people > Personal hate vendetta. This has worked in the past, so they tried it here. They were more interested at trying to help out Zimbabwe, than revenge. Its pretty obvious.
