Hi

I would need some advice here , but first here are the specs

Laptop Specs : Dell Vostro 14000 , 2 GB RAM , Dell Wireless mini card - working and compatiable with the Netgear Modem , Windows Vista Basic 32 bit OS , IE 6 , Mozilla 3.xx
Router Spec: Netgear DGN2000 router cum wireless modem.
ISP : MWeb

Issue : Unable to Access internet through browser using the DNS name.

Description : The ADSL line is fine , I have set up the router and have made the settings provided by MWEB.
All the lights that show the status of the ADSL , Wireless and the Internet on the modem are looking healthy. When I do an IP config I get the IPv4 and IPv6 , the subnet mask and the default gateway addresses. I can connect to skype but when i try browsing the internet through explorer 6 or firefox 3.xx I cannot access the pages , the more information tab on the IE , suggests that one of the possible reasons could be that it is unable to resolve the DNS name.
I have tried using both the ethernet cable and the wireless options but to no avail.
My friend who has an XP machine tried connecting to internet through the ethernet cable and he was successful.

What I have tried already :
1.Updated windows with the latest updates.
2. Disabled the windows firewall , windows defender , the Mcafee firewall
3. Restarted Computer and the modem and tried connecting.

The network icon on the task bar shows the internet is connected , i was even able to download the
windows update and was very easily able to connect to skype. I used the router's console and pinged the web addresses like Google and facebook , i was able to get their IP , I then pinged those IP through cmd prompt and was able to recieve the reply. I then tried putting the IP on the browser and it worked fne for google but the facebook page was displayed only in text ( no back ground nothing ).

If any of you can help me here that would be great
Thanks :) :)

Log in on the router page (thats 192.168.0.1 for that model) and set up a custom DNS to 8.8.8.8

If that fixes the problem, then find out what mweb's DNS server address is & put that there instead of 8.8.8.8.

EDIT: Its under Basic setting ->Use These DNS Servers -> Primary DNS

Start -> run -> cmd

ping www.google.co.za
ping www.co.za
ping www.msn.com

ping 74.125.45.106
ping 196.35.20.131
ping 65.55.17.26

If the first set doesn't work, but the second does it's a DNS resolution fault
If both sets work it's a browser/software fault ( like a transparent trojan proxy )

Control Panel- > Network -> Network Adapter (normally called LAN or somethign like that) , right click on it, go to properties, look for TCP/IP and make sure your dns servers are automatic there.

You might have static TCPIP settings in there somewhere.

What happens when in the command prompt you type:

ipconfig /all
