Unable to assign static IP

I have Mega W100WR DSL router that connect to a switch and then from the switch there are three PCs connected. The TCP/IP protocal has been set to has been set to obtain the IP address automatically. This works fine and all PCs can access the internet.

However, when I assign a static IP address to each of the PCs then I can not access the internet on any of the PCs. Why does this happen? When I ran a dialup connection I could do this without any problems.

I have disabled the firewalls on all machines and that did not make any difference. I even changed the IP address on the DSL router from the default to a 192 ranger and that did not work either. The minute a static IP address is allocated I have no access to the internet.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks in advance.

you must make sure the dns and gateway setting are correct on the pcs
the gateway must be your router addr and the pcs must be in the same ip range as the gateway addr.

They are: for example the router could be 192.168.100.1 and each of the pcs would be would then be .1 .2 .3 and so on. The default gateway is set the the ip address of the router

on you setup:
rutr : 192.168.100.1
pc1 must be :192.168.100.2
pc2 : 192.168.100.3
pc3 : 192.168.100.4

the best is to enable dhcp on rutr and auto ip and dns on pcs
use the netbios names (full computer names) to connect between pcs

Thats how I have got it. A subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 but no access to the net with these static IPs

1. what does ipconfig /all give you?
2. can you ping the rutr
3. if you enable dhcp on rutr and auto ip, dns on pcs can you connect to int

Gives a whole lot of stuff. But from that I can see that my router is 192.168.0.2 and the pc I ran it from is 192.168.0.1.

2
Cant ping the router but I think that my be my firewall that is blocking it.

If allow automatic assigning of IPS then I can surf the net

Question. Do I need to disable the "enable dhcp on rutr " on the router if i want to assign static IP

scratch that,
check under dhcp on you rutr setup
look for somethig like
Specify fixed Mac Address Mapping to fixed IP Address
now enable dhcp and input you pcs mac addr and what the ip should be for that mac
do that for all your pcs
make sure to enable auto ip, dns on pcs

took off the setting for DCHP and now I can access the net on the static IPs. Also saw that I did not have the DNS IPs on the network card settings

Thanks a lot Coetzee.

Bye the way have you ever setup a wireless nework between the DSL routers?

Found the mac address mapping on the router. It actually pics up the other PCS with their mac addys. It has an option to reserver the IP address to that mac addy.

Is that a beter way to do it than say turning off the DHCP server on the router?

Just noticed that if I turn off the DHCP server on the router then the PCs do not show up under the mac address mapping. Then you have to add them manualy. But if the DHCP is enabled then they show up and you can reserve that IP address. Which method do you think is better?

I would use the later method but thats just me
use the method you feel comfortable with in this situation ;)

Thanks very much for the help Coetzee. Saved me a lot of hair pulling. :D

I agree that mapping a mac address to an IP address is the route to go, it would be nice tho if those were open source routers and you could set up a decent rig with a nice dhcpd.conf file..... if only!
