Unable to cancel call forwarding on MTN

I have a strong aversion to voicemail. I used to be able to cancel all call forwarding so that my missed calls never got to voicemail - they would ring until the caller got bored, or in the event that I wasn't available, just beeped and hung up.

I am following the same procedure I used to follow (##002#) to cancel all forwarding. This is corroborated by my android phone settings and by using *#61#, *#62# and *#67#. There is no forwarding enabled on my number.

Yet my calls still drop after 30 seconds and I still get sms messages from Voicemail to tell me I have missed calls from people.

This is problematic for automated systems. I use a centurion GSpeak ultra which you could miss-call to open the gate. The call would drop immediately and no airtime would be used by the caller - which was great for allowing my domestic worker to get in and out easily. However, this has changed and when GSpeak dropped the call, the call would be directed to voicemail.

After lots of time spent on the line to MTN, they have cancelled my voicemail service, but not the redirect. This means that when you miss-call the gate, the caller hears "the service is not available". Then the gate opens. It's a bit odd.

Interestingly, the default ring time on the GSpeak was 30s before going to the secondary number. When MTN implemented this change, the secondary number never got dialled because if I reject the call or take too long to answer, they got sent to my voicemail which isn't useful. I've changed the ring time to 15s before trying the alternate, but I often, out of habit, reject the call, and the people at the gate hear "the service is not available" over the intercom.

I really frustrated that they'd make such a significant change with no thought to the integrated and automated systems that they have now degraded.

Sadly due to signal issues there are no other providers that cover our area and so porting to another network isn't possible at this time.

Any thoughts, magic codes, secret handshakes that can just get rid of voicemail forever?
