Hi,

I recently became an ADSL user, and am using the Marconi 4-pots router. I have 2 PC's, one running Win 98 and the other running Win XP, both of which connect to the router via their own cable. The Win 98 machine is using the PPPOE software supplied by Telkom and is able to connect to the Internet through the router without any problems.

However, I'm unable to get the Win XP machine to connect properly. I've setup a LAN connection (although I'm not sure if this is setup correctly, but I have assigned it an IP falling within the IP range specified by the router) and a broadband internet connection (so it uses the native XP PPPOE) but whenever I try to connect it tells me the remote computer did not respond. I am able to ping the router and view the router's web admin interface but thats as far as it goes.

The thing is that this WAS all working last week, but then on Saturday neither PC was able to connect to the Internet. We phoned Telkom and they got the Win 98 PC's connection working again but I am unable to connect through the Win XP machine, even using the settings that DID work before the problem occurred. So my guess is one of the router settings has been changed and this is causing the problem..?

If anyone can provide any help it would be greatly appreciated. I thought I would post my problem here first, rather than try get support out of Telkom

Thanks

You can try setting your LAN Settings to obtain its IP address automatically.
In Win XP it should detect the router and automatically give you internet access.

I have already tried this but my XP doesnt seem to like it. After I restart Windows it doesn't establish any LAN connection and I can't even view the 'Network Connections' window (the window tries to display but nothing happens). If I understand right the router has to have DHCP enabled in order to have IP's automatically assigned? I have set it as such but it still doesn't work. Just so you know, it DID previously work using a static IP.

Telkom ADSL support MORONS

Don't know if this is related, but ..

Had a similar problem when ADSL went down on a Thursday.

Called adsl support and they went through all the router settings using the browser interface.

Support got me to change a few settings and to re-enter my username and password. Did all that. Still didn't work.

Friday they said it was an exchange problem - but could not give an expected time as they "didn't know what the problem was"

Saturday afternoon it was reported as repaired - but still unable to connect.

Sunday - same again.

Monday - got telkom "investigating" my problem.

Tuesday - technicians come and test the line - joker could not even get his own laptop to work as he forgot his password to start Windows. Eventually gets another technician from 20km away to test and report that the line is OK.

Call Support again - check the settings - still no connection.

Eventually got the "hellin" and "reset factory defaults" for the router from the browser menu.

Hey, Presto - damn thing works !!!

Now I gotta know why !!!

Go through all the steps that support took me through.

As soon as I change the default Username and Password to the one for my MWeb adsl account, it stops working.

So if I leave the factory default settings, and put the username and password in the Broadband dialup on my XP machine, works like a dream.

Not sure if it's the same problem, but hope this helps someone.

Could this be related to Telkomonopoly changing ports/DSLAMs from FastPath to Interleaved? - Maybe some ADSL modems/routers require specific settings to be changed to accomodate the changes at the exchange...?

hi all, just to let you know i got it all working again :) seems it was cos i didnt enable bridging on the router properly
