Hi all

I have an MTN prepaid SIM which I haven't used for several months. I was surprised to see that the SIM still works, and decided to use it for a backup internet connection with a spare huawei router I have lying around.

The problem is, I can't seem to load any Data on the SIM no matter what method I try

I've tried purchasing Data from my bank, which gives a technical error.

I also tried using MTN's own web-based topup OOB topup portal, which also fails (whenever I input my credit card details and select a bundle, I get an error saying that I am "not eligible" for the bundle and that I should try another bundle. Then, as soon as I select another bundle, I see another error saying there was a problem and they are working on it and that I should try again in a few minutes. I've tried on different days and no difference.

I then purchased regular airtime from my bank, which loaded fine, and tried to use USSD *136# to convert the airtime to data. I can see all the menus and different data bundle choices for regular data or bozza data, etc. However, as soon as I confirm to buy a bundle, I immediately get a USSD response message saying "Error processing your request, please try again later."

So now I've spent money that I can't get back trying to get data that wont load no matter how I try to purchase it. Unless there's a way to fix this issue, it seems my only resort will be to RICA a new prepaid SIM and then transfer the airtime over in order to convert it to data on the new SIM, otherwise I stand to lose all the airtime (R700) which I'm obviously not happy about.

I've tried sending MTN customer support an E-mail, but so far no reply.

Does anyone have any idea how I can go about getting this issue fixed? Would an MTN store in a mall likely be able to assist? Is there any MTN representative on this forum who could maybe do a technical checkup on my SIM to see what could be causing this issue?

Thanks in advance

Maybe go to an MTN shop for help? R700 is a lot to waste.

Exactly. No ways going to let it go to waste, just trying to figure out what to do but I agree MTN store is going to be the best bet. Thanks for your reply!

I landed up getting a new SIM and transferring the airtime to that one. Can only transfer R200 per day so it took a few days lol, but that was the only solution for me.
I do still have the old SIM and it's still behaving the same way, so if you know how to fix it I'd like to know :)

Usually MTN cuts you off after 90 days of inactivity. Perhaps your sim was cut-off but the cut-off failed half way.
Yes I think that's what happened. The sim has been inactive/unused now (without any airtime) for several months. I tried it about a week ago and it was still "working" (albeit with the same issues). Lol. special sim indeed - I'll keep it for shits and giggles [read: further experimentation]

MTN prepaid sims can be weird, took weeks to sim swap my Sim card from a stolen phone to a new Sim, and kept on failing and refusing to work properly.
