My mom bought a micro SD card for her phone Samsung Galaxy S5, when it ran out of space. Without consulting me she just whent to the closest dodgy shop she could find and asked for a card. The guy at the shop inserted the card and also copied all her photos on to it. Card worked fine for a couple of days, then she pulled out the card to give to me to make a backup of all her photos.
My iMac doesn't read the card, my MacBook Pro doesn't read the card, my Win10 company laptop doesn't read the card, putting it back in her phone the card doesn't show up.

Weird thing is, after sitting in my MBP for a while a message pops up that it was unable to read the inserted disc, it then gives me the option to eject or ignore. This message tells me that something is at least happening, but I can't see the card even in Disc Utility.

Any ideas?

Update, I got it to show up in Disc Utility, it says the card is uninitialized, what does this mean and how do I fix this to get the data readable?

Short answer, you don't.. The filesystem on the memory card is corrupt, which likely happened when your mother took it out of the phone without unmounting it first..

You may be able to recover the photos using some form of recovery software.. I am not a fan of Apple, so I am not in no position to suggest a suitable application for you to try and do this that is compatible with Apple..

He also has a Win10 company laptop..

He does but, it is a COMPANY laptop and in general it is against company policy to install applications willy nilly..

I do remember now that, with my last memory card purchase, I got a voucher for a year subscription to download the company's recovery software for memory cards and flashdrives.. Don't recall which company it was now but, will check when I get home.. Perhaps they have a MAC version..

It was Sandisk.. This is the software..

I see there is a Mac version.. Have not used it, so I cannot comment on whether it works or not..

So you've got the old card still, right? At worst she's lost a couple days which is unfortunate but it could be worse.

I use Disk Drill Media Recovery on my mac. If it's on there it will find it.

Has anyone in the history of whenever unmounted an SD card before removing it from their phone?

Maybe I am the only person anal enough to do so considering the fact that this very thing can happen..??

I think it's more likely that she bought a knock off POS card that would have self-destructed if her neighbour sneezed.
