Is there someone here that can supply me with reliable information on the status of the local loop unbundling for which ICASA has received a mandate in 2007 ? I believe this is the single most important aspect to be addressed in fixed line telecommunications in SA and yet there appears to be no progress on the matter.

The absence of healthy competition in the fixed land line supply market in SA is a source of constant frustration for thousands of people across the country on a daily basis. This monopoly has to come to an end now.

I believe the time has come to instigate a law suit against ICASA or the individuals within for not carrying out their public duty in this regard. They need to be removed from office so competent and driven people can be appointed to see this matter through to the end.

Is there anyone on this forum that can provide input in this regard and perhaps point me to a lawyer who specializes in the facets of law applicable to this fiasco ?

Thank you in advance

There has been no progress...

Therefore the status is still "imminent"...

This is the single biggest thing holding us back right now. The telkom "line rental" is by far the biggest cost of internet especially if you include the fact that they force you to get their R130pm phone line at that same time. I really don't understand why a conglomerate of other operators have not clubbed together to compete with telkom in this space. If a big ISP where to team up with one a neotel or something I'm sure they could roll out their own local loop to the bigger cities and still make it financially viable.
