Do you think it viable for Cell C to offer uncapped 3G?

It doesn't have to be full speed 3G - but either fully uncapped at a lower, soft-capped (1.8mbps) or lower after the current 5GB?

Would it work out for Cell C to offer something like that?

With enough shaping it probably could be. Question is, would it be viable for their customers.

I'd definatley be in ... and I thought most customer would jump at uncapped - albeit it slower.

I mean 1.8 is still quick enough for me - even 1mpbs (100kb/sec) is decent uncapped!

Current performance of the CellC network would indicate that the network would suffer from congestion issues.

Pause to consider the following for a few seconds----- have you ever considered that the MTN & Voda pricing on 3G is structured in a way to discourage high volume users? We all complain that its expensive / a rip off and it probably is. However, high volume users have a disproportionately highly negative impact on lower volume users. Pricing @ 20c/meg ensures that any high volume user will do their best to use some other form of connectivity be it ADSL or WiMax etc

Nope, it is not viable. Recognised in few first world countries.

If CellC could make an uncapped service and throttle the speeds at 1meg for R300 per month - count me in. It will actually be a start to cut down on telephone rental :) and DSL rental :).......

I doubt we will ever see this everyone would grab this offer and over 1million people would be on the base stations or more and practically no bandwidth for us then :(

They shouldnt even think about that, if they cant fix current issues.

High volume users, P2P etc should stick to fixed line ADSL. We don't need the network to slow down anymore than it already has since it's inception

@surfs-up that is fine in theory however the reality in South Africa is that there are two classes of internet users. Those with access to ADSL and those without and lets face it, much of the blame belongs to Telkom.

I would like nothing better than to abuse uncapped ADSL but my situation is such that I am not able to

No, it will not be viable. Maybe at a later stage, yes, but not right now.

Maybe larger caps, yes, but not uncapped.

Uncapped will be largely confined to fixed-wire ADSL.

Is the bottleneck basically the backhaul from the towers? If the backhaul was good enough, uncapped 3G would actually be possible, right?

imo, if iBurst can do it, why not?

I would JUMP at a CellC Uncapped offer, even if it's only 1mbps or something

Yes absolutely, I, and I am sure everyone else would agree that Telkom is a major problem. This is exactly why uncapped HSPA+ should not be allowed on the Cell C network.

Fix Telkom infrastructure first, then check if the network can handle the uncapped traffic......WITHOUT causing speeds to drop, then perhaps yes.

Personally, I don't think this will happen anytime soon with current hardware - look at AT&T in the USA......when the iPad was released, they had an option of uncapped 3G on the AT&T network, but after a few weeks they quickly scrapped it. They realised that it wasn't feasible, the network slowed right down, resulting in very angry customers. So they were forced to do away with it.

I am sure in the not too distant future, it will happen...just not right now.

I'm using uncapped Vodacom. So it's viable.

Care to elaborate what you are on ?

AFAIK Vodacom's only attempt at cheap 3G data, was their "Webstorm" offer, where they tried to match Cell C with 2GB and 5Gb packages - but this deal never even made it off the ground, it got cancelled before it started.

What package are you using, and, importantly....what does it cost ? It could be a business package that would be so unaffordable to the man in the street, that the numbers would be so low, as to not affect the network

ID PAY for upcapped on CellC, the mweb offer sounds good but the speed..major downgrade from what i have
