Hi

I'm looking for uncapped and unshaped after hours, for downloads at home.
This seems to be the mythical unicorn these days, because the fine print either says you'll be shaped in the top 50% or after 200gb.

Budget is R900 excluding adsl and phone line rental, just the bandwidth.
That's Axxess Express+ money and according to Axxess I'll get full use of the 4mb line after hours.
Just never know when IS decides I've had enough though.

Which other ISP would you consider?

BTW do the other 384 uncapped lines work that way, where you get full speed after hours? I find little about this on their websites, only Openweb is reasonably clear about it.

I think your line must be 4Mbps but your account may be a 384 one - and it runs at 192kbps in the daytime and at full speed (4) after h.

Yeah I get that, do other 384 uncapped accounts on 4mb lines behave the same way? Full speed after hours?
The prices seem to range a fair bit for these 384 lines so maybe some of them don't run at 4mb after hours.

Openweb!

Can you tell me anything about the shaping after 200gb?
Down to 0-384kb for news groups, torrents etc for the rest of the month?
In that case even Axxess sounds better if the top users are getting +800gb and are only shaped for a 10 day rolling period.

The new IS aup doesnt apply to the express+ accounts.

I overlooked that, thanks. Looks like the winner.

Actually it still does. the 384 Express + account has the following:

After Hours User Policy NEW!

* 10 Day Rolling WIndow - If you're in Top 20% of IS users for this connection speed, you will be shaped
* User Policy applies to After Hours (8PM - 8AM), Weekends & Public Holidays

Yes it does apply to the Express+ accounts. :(

Is anyone using Openwebs "After Hours Uncapped and Unshaped ADSL" ?
I see the one for R1299 has no FUP?

I'm using the R1299 one... and yes... there are no restrictions. It's perfect.

Perfect apart from forking out R1299.

It is really ironic that it now costs more for same performance we got before Seacom landed.

Go to this link page, choose Uncapped express+ and click on the "+ Show me more information" link. Then also look at the VIEW 10 day rolling window DEMO. And then be surprised! For that money you can buy a big capped but unshaped chunk.

That applies to Axxess, but it's Openweb who has the shaping after 200gb. I was wondering if it's shaped after 200gb all the time and to what levels. If someone's on Openweb and goes past 200 please let me know, it could well be it's only shaped when the load is heavy and that might only be a small part of the evening. I don't know.

Anyhat given the above numbers I might be better off at Axxess, or not.
I think I'll try Axxess from this evening and see how it goes this month. I still have what's left of Telkom's 5gb and 30gb local after IS decides I'm abusing my "uncapped" account.

The R599 Unshaped 384k option?

Is it full line speed after hours? Then shaped after 200gb?

There is no magical usage limit where you get throttled. It's uncapped like it says on the box.

You should always get near full line speed. It's not like the other accounts though where it's 384 office hours then 4meg at night. 384 account gives you 384 speed day and night.

I see, mixed it up with the after hours account.... " * Fair Usage Policy: After 200GB the account will be shaped. "

Damn, bought the Express+ and that's useless too.
news.axxess.co.za and news.isdsl.net both have the same behaviour, spikes to full speed for a few milliseconds then drops to just about zero for quite a bit longer, to average out at 20kB/s

Have I forgotten to buy a membership at some special server or something?
Because the saix server works great on my Telkom line I didn't think I'd have to look around for this as well.

Anyone on Express+ experiencing the same?

Edit : Nevermind, a paid subscription elsewhere confirms it's the IS news server that's full of crap.
