Hey peeps

is there a significant difference between a 384 or a 512 line? i want the internet just for downloads, and a bit of gaming.

what would the total cost be of both plus the line rental? and about how many gigs do yall download a month with it?

i have little knowledge on internet :o been using vodacom so your help will be very useful

tanx

The 512 lines have been bumped up to 1 mb by telkom. Afaik 512 no longer exists. Definitely worth getting a 1 mb uncapped.

Sent from my GT-I9000 using MyBroadband Android App

As said, since 512 has been upgraded, definitely worth the upgrade. Prior to the upgrade definitely not.

So the absolute cheapest uncapped is still around R700.00 in total?
Are there no discussions about dropping, merging or lowering some costs?

It seems mobile internet has come along way in the last few years, but ADSL isn't quite following due to the mandatory R400.00!

Well, not quite the cheapest, you can still get a 384 line instead.

The thing is...with 384 at your entry, you'll be able to game and browse. Forget about downloads.

512 (1mb) lines are R290, but 4mb lines are R415 if I'm not mistaken. So either look at entry 384 connections (R250) or 4Mb (R415), it makes more sense than going for a 1Mb either way.

1mb line price is still too high. 4mb is R413 and 1mb is R289, which means there is a difference of only R124. speed difference is huge. if you have a decent cap for a decent price then 4meg is worth it, otherwise for uncapped go 1meg.

Get the 1mb uncapped trial from telkom and then you can see if it's worth it(and hopefully new deals are out by the time the trial comes to an end)
i just had mine activated on friday.

You get a Router(depends on availability i got a wifi one luckily) not sure if ill have to give the modem back after cancellation but i don't think so as there is no contract but could someone confirm please?
The adsl 1mb access line,
and the uncapped account.

and the latency has been great +- 28ms ping to local jhb server.

but coming off 3g you will notice the slow download speeds but for gaming it will be much better!

I really don't think the cost differential is worth moving to 512kb from 384kb. I would do as holy maniac suggests and check out the 1mg uncapped from trial from Telkom and see if at that speed you could see yourself spending more. I've downgraded from 6mb to the 1mb uncapped since we moved, with a family of 6. It sucks. No more multiple youtube browsers, downloads going plus online gaming. So for me, as soon as this trial is up, I'll be moving to the 4mb option. Just wish it wasn't so damn expensive.

haha i feel you're pain, Had a 7mb line speed previously just got the 1 mb uncapped trial now and will be upgrading back to 4mb when trial is finished, dont think uncapped 4mb is on the table though :( i cant wait so long for meh HD :D

My two cents... If you're not downloading the internet overnight, a 384 line will still get the job done, and a wireless account will give you the "speed boost" when needed...

I suppose if its only for Facebooking and checking your gmail, but once you upgrade from 384Kbit to 4MBit, there is no going back.

On Monday I upgraded my Telkom ADSL to the 1 Meg Telkom Uncapped and I am VERY happy. I do have Vodacom and 8ta 3G for fast downloads when needed however to date I never needed to fire them up.

Not for one minute did they throttle or shape my account the last fews day. I am really happy. Maybe I should not say how happy I am before everyone else jumps ship.
