Ok, so I have been on my phone for the past few weeks so following the many fast moving threads relating to uncapped offerings has been tough. I therefore need help!

My ADSL line is up and running, I have cancelled my previous four ISP accounts and am now looking to try one of these uncapped offerings. The question is which one best suits MY needs. The reason I say my needs is :

I am on a 384k line.
I have grown accustomed to, and enjoy, using news servers to download things I want.
Things like latency and ping speeds do not worry me as I do not game at all.

So we have Mweb, Afrihost, Axxess, SAOL (although this is closed now I think) and the early starters of Digichilli and Screamer (are they both still around?). Any others I should be looking at? So my question is which ones will give me access to a news server and will give me decent speeds to these news servers mainly after hours and on weekends? The laptop is used for work on weekdays.

Or am I better off just sticking with Telkom and getting my 20Gb free local to use on the news servers at speeds of around 38K? Discussions seem to show that even with the slow speeds on the uncapped offerings when it comes to downloads, I should still be able to do in excess of 20Gb with some patience. Is this true or will I get frustrated? I don't mind waiting over night for something I want but two or three days to get it will be frustrating!

Nothing?

Ok, well let me ask this then. If you sign up for Mweb uncapped now do you pay for half a month or do they pro-rata it further and you only pay for one week?

I'm having to do my own research it seems ;)

I notice that OpenWeb's uncapped offering has not been spoken about much. I see they offer uncapped for R219 for 384k. More interesting is the Gold offering as it states :

** Only P2P and torrents are shaped on this account. No other protocols will be shaped. Shaping (if any) will relax during off peak network periods (usually after hours and on weekends).

So no shaping on the news server? But my experience of the IS news server was never very good anyway but things may have changed.

The confusing thing is that it states you can get 384k GOLD uncapped for R99 more in one place but in another it states this service costs R499. What gives?

go for the openweb gold uncapped its an bit more but you will get beter speeds...

I'm on 4MBIT and I've been on Afrihosts uncapped from before they introduced their ridiculous capping and after and now I'm on MWEB and I must admit (to my disgust) that MWEB is tops.

I have another line running SAOL's 384k uncapped which as far as 384k service goes was by far superior as it was unshaped uncapped, but alas.. SAOL uncapped is no more.

I'd say MWEB.

PS: I download using torrents mostly and also do not game.

Mweb seems to be the one at the moment. Unfortunately very little coverage is given to the IS offerings. Just wondering what they are like.

It just bugs me that Mweb will make me pay for half the month when it is already the 23rd. I feel I should just wait until the first but that means using the scraps I have left on the other ISPs until then.

Reading the last couple of pages of each one should give you a fair idea of the current performance. I am currently with AH on 384 and have used over 30GB and very happy with the current performance.
