First off I don't know much about how routers work and how isp's supposedly block p2p applications. My question is whether I would be able to use p2p apps if I have my own router and install an uncapped line. wouldn't it be like adding a external isp to your router?

well we have IS and SAIX mostly as the providers then there is those who does their own thing like XDSL.

from those entities are the block/shaping rules implemented or not - and you can't do jack about it.

obviously your apps would work, but as i said if your last leg limits the traffic well thats it then.

Okay I've been checking through a couple of threads, and catching up on some of the termenology, which I still lack alot. I know now that telscum will probably shape regardless of anything (didn't know that SAIX and IS were telkom run >_<). Regardless..

A few more questions though:
How baddoes shaping limit traffic speed-wise?
Will running on my own router lower the amount of shaping?
Will simply changing the port to 80 on apps like DC++ lower or limit the shaping?
What applications are currentyl bocked or blackisted on SAIX?
Any suggestions on reliable uncapped isp's?

SAIX and IS are definitely not the same thing and not Telkom run either.

AS far as I understand SAIX is telkom.. http://www.saix.net/
I can't find any information on IS. Any links or the actual name not the abbreviation.

Misconceptions OF NOTE!!!

SAIX - South African Internet Exchange - Founded by Telkom - TELKOM SAIX EXCHANGE - www.saix.co.za

IS - Internet Solutions a division of DIMENSION DATA - www.is.co.za

NOT THE SAME COMPANY AT ALL.

They are arch rivals, SAIX get bandwidth via cable while IS used satelite for its international. Hence diff uses/prices.

Shaping, you seem to have an issue with shaping an obsession. Basically what shaping is, ISP's allocate certain priorities to certain services, usually its http/email as top priority hence they get more bandwidth, p2p gets less etc, hence its slower. Unshaped is better for games etc but is more expensive. You will never really get away from shaping in SA as bandwidth is too expensive. Having your own router or an extra router does nothing vs shaping as shaping is done via the ISP or Backbone you use e.g. saix/IS/verizon.

Hope this helps.
